Well, first I'd like to say that I'm sorry to read about your incident. I'm sure it was scary and no one deserves to deal with that.

That said, it is sadly the reality of urban living that things like this will happen even in the most popular neighborhoods of the largest cities in the country. Short of choosing to live in the suburbs or exurbs - and tragedy can happen even there on occasion - refining your street wisdom may be among your best sources of defense.

Thanks for all the support. I'm getting better emotionally and letting it go. I'll try to be more aware of my surroundings and maybe buy pepper spray or buy those things you put on your keychain. I just wanted to tell people that even in "trendy" areas of the city can be pretty dangerous and warn people to be careful and never go out and walk alone. I used to love this city and loved the sports teams but now I don't know if I can take it anymore. I'll either move to a suburb or go to another city when I'm old enough to move. Again, thanks for the support. Nobody deserves this.

Uncles is a gay bar, no? Could be this jerk targeted that area for that particular reason. If he didn't have a gun or a knife, you better believe he wasn't getting my money. Yes, be more aware of your surroundings and don't go out alone at night... anywhere.

I live in Queen Village, and also went to La Salle University. I've been living in Philadelphia for 7 years. I have never had an incident with anyone, and I always walk around at night. Even around La Salle I never once felt threatened. Also, Queen Village is an amazing area.

Oh no how will Philadelphia go on if the Penn students don't stay?!
It's never a good thing when educated people leave the city. What if every doctor decided to go elsewhere after being a victim of crime? Philly needs to recruit intelligent young minds to our colleges and then find a way to keep them here. Most victims have ties here and just can't pack up and go somewhere else. The OP has that option and that's not a good thing.

We need more groups like the Guardian Angels and Neighborhood Watch.

I think you're being a bit dramatic, but that is expected after what happened to you. These kind of crimes can happen anywhere, I still believe most of the crimes in the city happen amongst criminals, but that could be changing, there was that girl who robbed of her bike, raped, and killed a few weeks ago.

I've lived in the Philly area for 20+ years and nothing like this has ever happened to me. You probably just look like an easy target.
