I do know that the lower Northeast has become more diverse in recent years. I'm not familiar with whatever negative effects supposedly came from that. I do know that it's encouraged some of the traditionally white residents to relocate out into Bucks County and across into New Jersey.

Thank You, I grew up in Philly & now reside in LA. I remember being affiliated with a gang in the early 80's from SWP called the 5-4 Mob (about 1500 deep) over at Shaw Jr. High. & back then if you went beyond Spingfield Ave you had to deal with 5-0 Woodland Ave, (Crazy guys & girls....Who remembers the Holly Hoes? (LOL)) They were about 2500 deep, & then you had the Ville (Bartram Village Progets) over at 5-4 Elmwood and 5-6 Cedar Ave, 5-7 B-More, 5-2 Whitby, & a whole bunch of smaller cliques...Just on the South Side alone, & when you got to the North Side, (accross Market St. you had 5-2 Mkt, 6-0 Mkt (Better known as the Moon Gang, cause when the sun when down they came out. (LOL) They were about 4000 deep. (But that's all they was...could really rumble worth S#!^.
One of their cliques was a group on knuckle heads that called themselves the Mighty Mutha ****as....Really & you had to be atleast 6' 2" to get in.
(LOL) As a kid I remember seeing a crew of them together coming accross 59th & Chestnut one night & we all ran in the house, they looked like 3 or 4 basketball teams. (LOL) All of this was just in West Philly (North & South Sides alone, not counting North, South, G-Town, even Mt. Airy & West Oak Lane had corners back then...Like Dog Town, The Clang, 75th Ave.
I say all this to say that it was very, very, organized back in the early 80's & late 70's & if you went somewhere that they didn't know you, you were asked " Where you from?" & it got so bad that even when you said nowhere they'd say nowheres getting to be pretty deep cause every body that's starting to walk through here is claiming Nowhere, and then you could cancel christmas. Believe me it's nothing like that in Philly anymore! These young knuckle heads that are claiming the the old corners are doing just that..Claiming and the ones (supposedly)claiming bloods & crips.....PLEASE...... If your not trolling you'll be fine, I tell people here in LA that Philly guys damm near all carry guns & are hot headed so you can be shot for damm near anything when dealing with that type of young knucklehead. You'll see, Philly's cool.

Pretty much the WHOLE CITY is gang infested? If that's what you're saying then you don't know what the heck you're talking about.
Now.....If you mean that there's alot of knuckle heads & trouble makers on the streets then you'd be right.

In spite of the way the thread started out, it IS a decent question to ask...
In fact, I'm getting ready to move to Philly in early 2008, and was wondering, basically, the same thing...
I've heard that NE Philly is okay but then again, I see in this thread that many think it's going downhill......
Other cities have ZIP Codes they tell you to avoid, is Philly the same way and if so, what ZIP Codes should I look at, if I'm looking to purchase a 2-3BR townhouse in the low $100's, but still not be living in gangland and worried about errant bullets flying through the windows at nighttime?
Any help you guys can offer would be appreciated.
For the record, I'm Irish and she's Hungarian, so even though we can deal with "diversity", we'd still prefer to be in a more white / European area, just due to the common denominators we'd share...

Currently I am residing in what is considered NE Philly and actually certain parts still are and are becoming still somewhat desirable.
For example zip codes 19137 & 19134 are the aforementioned with houses currently in the 100s but new townhouses are in the 200s and rising. You may want to land something while the real estate market is still low.
Once decent neighborhoods such as Mayfair I'm told are now starting on the downslope, conversely once bad neighborhoods such as Kensington are undergoing a renewal of sorts and as such the prices are going up.
As far as your European background, you would blend in with no problem in the NE

North and West Philly have plenty of gangs. There are many bloods and crip sets forming but the most dangerous gangs are the various neighborhood gangs meaning colors dont mean a thing in this city. Be street smart and be aware of where you are.
