Default Can someone tell me what living in these three neighborhoods would be like?

1. Port Richmond -- I made an earlier post but have decided not to go for the house. Now I'm looking at a place near E Ann St and Edgemont.
2. University City -- Near S 49th St and Walton Ave
3. Queen Village -- just in general

Basically, I'm just wondering how day-to-day life would differ in these three neighborhoods. Are they all relatively safe areas to walk around in? Which offers the most variety, the most diversity, the most cultural opportunities, the most restaurants, bars, etc. etc.? Which would be the most "fun," I guess?

Queen Village would provide or be close enough to everything you're looking for. "Of course" that means it's the most expensive of your three considerations. You'd be near South Street and not very far from Old City, Washington Square West and the rest of Center City.

49th and Walton is technically a block or so west of what is considered University City. You'd be in West Philly proper. UC is one of the more socioeconomically diverse neighborhoods in the city. A fair amount of bars and lots of ethnic restaurants. At night, I would be a bit more aware of my surroundings compared to QV.

I admit to not knowing a lot about Port Richmond. It is close to gentrifying Fishtown as well as trendy Northern Liberties which itself just above Old City.

I live in Port Richmond, just bought a house there, and love it. It is safe, has a great community feel, and is 10 minutes from my job in Center City (I drive but could take transportation). I could even bike to my job. The down side is that Port Richmond is still pretty "old school." For example, a guy was arguing with his girlfriend loudly in front of one of my neighbors houses, and he literally dragged him with some other neighborhood guys to the end of the street and told him to get lost. I thought it was kind of cool.

I lived on Walton by 48th a few years ago. Do not go past 49th St. unless you grew up in West Philly. It is a great area! Good parking, great transit connections. Baltimore Ave has a ton to do, UCity is very close, and Center City is a 25-minute trolley ride. The only downside is the only grocery store within walking distance in the co-op which was small and had a waiting list. The other closer stores require taking a car or trolley and were overpriced. (I took the 34 trolley to Trader Joe's). The houses are beautiful until 49th St. If you have any specific questions, send me a message. And a final note, while you probably wouldn't feel comfortable living beyond 49th St, you'll feel comfortable walking there and going to the stores. (I used to walk to the Rite Aid at 53rd and Baltimore a lot.)

I second Port Richmond, especially if you're looking to acquire some equity in your house. It's one of the few areas of the city that is seeing appreciation rates higher than the norm (a percent or two a year) because of the gentrification going on. I moved here in 2004 and have seen my equity double even with the market downturn. It's actually quite safe and not a place one needs to worry about walking around at night in. The tradeoff is not being in one of the "prestige areas" of the city, although that comes with a price and not much hope of big return on your investment (or at all in some cases).

49th Street I have to laugh at people that move there. Shootings, stabbings and rapes galore! The West Philly area need to be bombed. Oh wait that already happened and nothing has changed since . Except for immediately around UOP Carry a gun. Queen Village sorta the same thing going on. Port richmond and bridesbug and roxborough best places to live in the city.

I love Port Richmond, Bridesburg, and Roxborough, but those are just ignorant things to say about the other neighborhoods. You are OUTTA YOUR MIND to say that Queens Village is a bad neighborhood- in fact it's one of the best in the city. I'm sorry, but anyone can google street view any part of Queens Village to see how 'terrifying' it is. Go ahead.
And as for 49th st, it was a little bit sketchy ten years ago, but it now is one of the best communities in the city- the area around Cedar Park is completely unrecognizable. I suggest that RAZZ go to Dock Street Brewery and sit outside, slightly unhinged, with a shotgun.

I don't understand why we cant agree that all 5 neighborhoods are examples of some of the many great neighborhoods in this city?

I just really like Queen Village..think it is one of the best neighborhoods in the city. Not that your other choices are bad, but I feel they pale in comparison. Queen Village is fun, interesting, great restaurants, fun area and is safe and has great upside. My two cents...good luck.
