I'm new to the city of Philadelphia...just moved here two days ago...and I've got a friend coming to visit next weekend. What are some of cool and walkable the bar/restaurant/nightlife areas where there will be a lot of places to drink and eat (and see music?) on a Friday night? We generally try to avoid anything with a "yuppie" feel but aren't too picky otherwise...thanks!

Old City or South Street. However, yuppies are impossible to avoid in those trendy tourist areas, like any other city.

Since you just moved to Philly I would suggest you get to know your neighborhood, via your neighborhood bars and local papi/chinese/corner stores, before branching out to those cold, impersonal, yet lively nightlife areas.

Northern Liberties may have potentially less yuppies patronizing its bars although it may be said yuppies who actually live there, especially at the Piazza at Schmidt's.

Otherwise, I agree that Buffy and Chad will probably not be overrunning the establishments in Old City and South Street.

BTW Dirty Frank's on the corner of 13th and Pine is decidedly un-yuppie.

I second No Libs, but most of CC will have offerings that meet this criteria even if the are intersperced with "yuppies". Being new maybe where you live may be helpful for suggestions. Additionally an area like manyunk may work as well. But good news is you are here so get out and explore. There are also meet up groups which may help to meet new people and explore some areas to find your groove.

The web should find you some meetup opportunities and also promos for philly events which can be a cheaper way to both explore and meet some new folks.

Welcome and hope you enjoy Philly

Seriously though?, isn't a yuppie just a late 20/early 30ish, urbanite who holds a professional job? Or am I missing something?
