Let me put it this way, there is nothing nice about this region of the country. People are vile here! No patience, respect for their surroundings, rude, ignorant, arrogant, overweight....want me to continue? Philadelphia is one ghetto after another separated by a few blocks of nice sandwiched in between. North Philly is the epitome of awful. Graffiti and trash line the streets, the average IQ mimics the low number taken in a blood pressure test. Of course there isn't such a thing as low blood pressure because the majority of the population here are obese. The ones that aren't, are on hardcore drugs. I understand that policies contribute greatly to why this is so, nonetheless it is so. Stay out of Philadelphia at all costs. Horrible quality of life!
DAMN!

Great first post, my man!

It's really more harmful to carry that conception of people around with you. There are many many good people in North Philadelphia who have to struggle against the awful situation they were born into. They did not and do not have the choices you did. You'll meet amazing people here, if you regard people here as fellow human beings.

I understand there's a lot of offensive people around though, and knowing who they are and what they're about, and knowing how to avoid them is better than becoming embittered towards the whole city.

I've had some really cool bus conversations man...

...changed my whole perspective on stuff

I take people as I find them. On an individual basis.

But would I want my daughter getting involved with a kid in north philly?

No way!

Common sense is all.

What if this particular individual was an upstanding young man. Say he was going to college and had good prospects for providing for your daughter?

You said you took people on an individual basis, then made a sweeping generalization.

I would not want my daughter having to travel to and from there.

I would have no problem with her dating someone FROM north philly, as long as they didn't live IN north philly.

I wouldn't be comfortable with having grandchildren needing to visit grandparents in north philly either.

Common sense is all.

I thought Fat Albert and Mushmouth were from North Philly. They seemed liked nice enough people. Do they still live in the area?

So was Bill Cosby I think.

North Philadelphia is a poor, black, ghetto. Most people from outside get really uncomfortable with these kinds of places. If you can get past the culture shock and start to look at why and how these places came to be, you start to have a bit more respect for the people and a better understanding for their situation.

It doesn't change the way the area is, but it helps understanding when you live near it I think. I'm also not sympathizing with the thugs, I'm just saying if I didn't try and understand why, why has this happened to this incredible city, then I would have become really really bitter and left already.

Knowledge and all that. Supposedly its what we're going to use to solve all these problems, or so I've heard.
