I'm from North Jersey (Clifton) and I'm attending a seminar in Aston, PA (at Neumann College) on Friday morning. I have to be there and checked in by 8:30 a.m., so I figured that would put me on I-95 headed through Philly around 7-7:30 a.m. I'm curious how traffic is on that road at that time of day. If it's busy I'll need to build some extra time into travel, but I don't want to leave at 5 am and have it only take two hours. Of course, I really don't want to leave at 6 am and have it take four hours. Any advice?

It is worse heading into Center City than heading out. If you get on 95 in Bucks County and come down through the city it's likely to be pretty bad, lots of stop and go. If you take the NJ turnpike to exit 4 and come over the Ben Franklin Bridge, then 95 won't be as bad (but your approach to Philly will help make up for it).

How about if I just avoided Philly altogether and took the NJ turnpike to 295 and crossed at the Commodore Barry Bridge? Is there anything wrong with that plan?

Yes. This is probably you best bet to avoid Philly and SJ area. Getting off exit 4 of NJ turnpike to cross Ben Franklin may not be a good idea (that's at least a 20 minutes drive to Ben Franklin Bridge from Exit 4). Pay a little more on NJ turnpike but much smoother drive.

I hope he took 322. What horrible directions to go through Philly when the turnpike is only 10 miles away.

It's good if you are going in around 6am...otherwise, I would say avoid it if you are heading into center city. The opposite direction is not as bad.

DEFINITELY take 295 or NJTPK to 322 and over Commodore Barry Bridge. 95S from Bucks County is a real parking lot in the morning.
