Cool Philadelphia maybe

Hello,
I have been asked to interview for a job in Upper Darby in the suburbs of Philly. I have never been to Philadelphia and don't know what its like there. I currently live in Manhattan so I've got to assume the cost of living is going to be significantly lower. Does anybody have any comments, advice or need to know facts about Philadelphia...Thanks

Scroll up to the top of the Philly forum and you'll find a number of people who will offer their opinions. For now I will say that about 95% of the world is less expensive than Manhattan so you will likely have more buying power even with a reduced salary by NYC standards.

Actually, living in the US is less expensive then living in many places overseas. We pay less for our consumables like food and gas then many other countries. If you are in a rent controlled apartment in NYC, I don't think it's that much more expensive to live there. Not that I would want to, but the biggest expense they have is housing.

I grew up in Upper Darby, its an ok area, but has changed a little from when I was a kid. It used to be a lot nicer, but still not a bad area and is still safe. I would suggest trying for apartments in the springfield area, which is maybe 15 minutes or so outside of upper darby. Philadelphia is ok..lived in the University City area while in college and had no problems. The rent was affordable and with univ of Penn near you will have professors, graduate students surrounding you and tons of things to do. (shopping, cafes, mueseums, etc.)

good luck,
