And the "attitude" and "rudeness" is as much of a bogus stereotype as similar ones about Philly.
Well, I don't think so....my opinion was formed from my own personal experience around New Yorkers -- tourist groups on the same tours I was on, or my Mom's "male friend" from Long Island, or vacationing New Yorkers at the Jersey shore, etc. -- so I didn't just take someone's word for it. They clearly make themselves known, and in an obnoxious way. I went on a tour of Ireland run by a local travel agent, and one of the great things about it was that the group consisted of all Philly folks....no loud, overbearing New Yorkers. Just my opinion, of course, but I wouldn't have cared about going on a tour with, say, a group of people from Minnesota or Kansas or wherever.

Well, granted, I don't spend much time on Long Island (or say Staten island). And I definitely won't try to argue any counter-opinion using my own anecdotal evidence (because really what would be the point?). I guess maybe I'm just conditioned to gut react to statements like that because I'm from Philly and I feel like I always have to dispel negative myths about Phillly people, and I want to give equal time, yknow?

Right, I understand you don't want to broad-brush the whole city if you've lived there and have a different experience.

As for similar descriptions of Philadelphians, I don't think that is the same stereotype. Or at least, that's not what I was talking about. We get tagged with the "tough snow-ball-throwing sports fan who booed Donovan on draft day, etc." Not untrue, but it just gets old after awhile.

I have family in Norf Jersey(North Jersey) and NY. When they come down to visit me they alway say. I could live down here (In Philly). I say to them all I can never, ever, ever, ever live in the NY Metro aireeyah (Area).

Too crowded for me. I need room.

I was reading the NY vs Philly thread and i could not help but respond to this thread.

I am from Philly and i love it here but i have been to NY more then one occasions and NY does not compare to PhillyI am not being bias but in terms of residence, architecture and culture Philadelphia is much more unique. Philadelphia to me is underrated because of the fact that it does not try to be NYC. Phialdelphia has it's own history, culture and it is the place where innovation starts. Philadelphia is still the cultural center of America. NYC is the mecca of an American city.
Philadelphis is much more liveable and there are bad parts just like any other city. Philadelphia has the most unique architecture in the east coast.

Philadelphia downtown is a collage of different European cities the The Parkway reminds me of Champs Elyses in Paris. The Museums and Library is Greek influenced. Olde City reminds me of Kesington in London.
when it comes to architecture philly isnt all that unique as you say. In my opinion boston rips philly in that category alone.

The only thing Philly has thats better then nyc and that nyc cant compare to is the cost of living. Thats about it really. Philly is like a second home to me(northeast) and when you say philly is the most unique in looks i laugh at this because northeast Philly looks exactly the same as the northern Bronx and the southern Brooklyn.

actually the crowdness of north jersey is not so different from philly. Since im familiar with both i can say that it isnt much a differene. As for nyc i think the "the way to crowded" talk is overrated. Not everywhere in nyc is Manhattan.

Could it be that the NYC metropolitan area is just so vast, it feels like you're constantly in a sea of humanity? NY covers 6700 sq. mi. v. 3800 of the metro Philly area, if I have my fact-checking right. In Philly, you can easily drive from the crowded city environment to the wide-open country within an hour. Seems like that would not be possible in NYC, right? So perhaps that gives the perception that NY is more crowded.

I keep seeing this thread pop up and the title really bothers me (although I said I wouldn't touch another NY v Philly thread. As someone who has spent roughly half of his long life in each city, I can tell you that NY and Philly are very similer to each other in every way. When I 1st moved to Philly from NY I often forgot which place I was in. The only big differences I find are that Philly has many more residents who are locally born and speak english as a 1st language and of course Philly's lower cost of living. You always have to remember that midtown Manhattan is only a small part of the NYC metro and doesn't have a lot in common with the rest of the city.
