Came from Bay area, CA to Downingtown,Chester County, PA last year.. Eagarly waiting to go back to Golden state just to escape from this terrible cold weather for six months.
Now I know why people dream of relocating to CA. Good weather and well paying jobs. Not sure about all CA, but Sillicon Valley has great schools. Much much better than what we see here.

OP should short list the school districts if it is a must as he mentioned and then look what you can get for 750K in them.
Radnor school district is old yet most expensive. 30yr old 5B home could cost a million+
T/E school district is also expensive, yet old.
Suggest to stay away atleast 30miles from Philadelphia.

Downingtown and Great valley school districts are good and relatively new and less expensive.. still 500K for 4B home.

So OP should get a realistic idea what 750K can buy you here only after doing some home work looking at active listings from http://www.realtor.com

Rule of thumb: "Good school district and expensive real estate goes together always"

Interesting. I rarely hear people comment that the schools are bad in this area, regardless of where they originally hail from. I wouldn't say that the Downington School District is a trophy district in this region but I have a hard time believing that you are used to something "much much better." In fact, I would think that the test scores of the DSD should stand on their own but I'd love to hear more about this. Can you elaborate? Is your dislike of the cold weather affecting your view of the schools?

And for the record, I'm dreaming about warm weather myself right now.

We like to refer to Radnor as mature, distinguishing and leafy.http://img.amwx.us/public/style_emoticons/default/popcorn.gif (broken link)

Honestly Downingtown is better noted for their sports than they are academics.

Im sure there are great public schools in the Bay Area but suburban Philly is no slouch in this regard either. These are all top notch districts in the burbs.

Lower Merion
Radnor
Tredyffrin-Eastown
Unionville-Chadds Ford
Great Valley
Garnet Valley
Central Bucks
Council Rock
New Hope-Solebury

Dont disagree with you about the high taxes and superior school districts going hand-in-hand but I don think thats a Philadephia area thing.

This weather's an anomaly. Just like last year's snow was an anomaly. Normally, Philadelphia winters have one or two snowstorms, a couple frigid snaps (20's or teens), but mostly temps in the 30's or 40's -- not horrible. However, perhaps this IS our new normal. If this summer is as awful as last summer (ungodly hot and humid for most of the season), I'm going to be really upset. This area is not known for extreme summers or winters, but that seems to be changing.

Just wondering if the original poster moved to Pennsylvania and if so, please, share some experiences? I'm considering moving and would love to hear positive and negatives.
