Hello folks! We'll be visiting Philadelphia for the first time in late May for our son's wedding. There will be approximately 10 of us, varying in age from 19 mos. to 74 years old. We're staying in Center City and are wondering whether it will be necessary to rent vehicles.

Any sightseeing we do will be in the area, and the wedding is close by as well. I've read the very prohibitive valet parking charges at most of the hotels, and wouldn't mind saving the $$$.

Should we be able to get around using public transportation? If so, what's the preferable method? Bus? Cab? Rail?

Thank you in advance!

Do not rent a car. There are plenty of buses to take you around. Where are you staying? Where is the wedding? Depending on the time, you may want to take a cab especially if you are very dressed-up.

you might want to arrange for a limo/shuttle to drive you into the city (since it would be at least two cabs). the train might work depending on how many young and over 65 people you have. an independence pass is $28

$28.00 for the family pass. One family of up to five people traveling together may use one pass, however one person, but no more than two, must be 18 years of age or older.

If not renting a car, which i dont recommend; it may be worthwhile to spend a few extra bucks for the right hotel location; depending on where the wedding is

Highly recommend the Independence Pass for SEPTA. All day access to subways, trains, trolleys, etc. The city is very walkable too!

I would second this. The Independence Pass is a good, cheap option for getting around. Also, if you're staying in Center City and during the touristy stuff, there will be plenty of cabs should you decide to take that mode of transportation.

No one has mentioned it yet, so I will. The downtown area of Philadelphia is extremely walkable, it was laid out and designed, and is maintained to be that way. People who live there do not own cars to get around. Well, some do, but they are a minority of the residents.

Thank you so much for all your replies! We are staying at the Marriott Residence Inn at Center City. I think the Septa pass makes a great deal of sense. We'll be taking cabs to the wedding (roughly 10 minutes from hotel). There are only 4 of us arriving at airport together, so I imagine a cab will work.

Thanks again!!

I'm going to go against the grain and say rent the car if it's feasable for you to do so. If you plan on going beyond CC, then hoping multiple buses will be more of an annoyance than a conveniance.
