I moved to Allentown from New York for a job in the area and I've been here for almost a year. No offense to anyone from the area but I can't take it anymore. I gave the area a legitimate chance but I've decided to commute from Philly. So, my question is...what do you think would be the best route to take? I-95? 309? 76? Has anyone done this? Is it miserable? Do you think a reverse commute wouldn't be as bad? I'm willing to wake up earlyyyy.....

I've done it many times, though not every day, day in and day out. From South Philly it is long and kinda miserable. I took I-76 to I-476 to 476 turnpike extension to Allentown. Once I took I-95 south to I-476 Blue Route to the turnpike extension. It cut out the traffic on 76 in West Philly, but only added distance so it worked out to be the same. Many times coming back I took 309; lots of lights in the Philly suburbs, but not a bad drive. I've never been so happy to see North Philly!!

I can't tell you the best route to take or any shortcuts. My only advice is to reconsider and come to Philly for fun instead of moving to Philly and going to Allentown for work. The real estate prices and rents are much lower up there, which makes sense, but the real ripoff is the high real estate taxes in the Philly metro area to fund the overloaded bureaucracies of local government.

If you do decide to relocate to Philly, consider living out that way, or even halfway to Allentown. Willow Grove, Lansdale, and surrounding areas should be at the top of your list to make your commute as short as possible. If you move closer in to the Philly metro area you will tire quickly of the long commute and burn out quickly on the job.

Good luck.

yes i agree having a long commute can really burn you out! i commuted from south philly to Trenton which isnt nearly as far as your commute would be to allentown and it still drove me nuts after a couple of years. that traffic will be consistent on 76.
