My partner and I are moving to Philly this summer but need to come ahead of time to look at apartments and find a place to live. We're looking at West Philly/ Univ. City with access to train and Penn.

So, what are cheapish places to stay for a few days while we look for apartments? We will not have a car, so we want somewhere that is pretty close to the area of town we're apartment searching in.

the only real hotels in west philly will be in university city (sheraton, hilton). most of the hotels are in center city, and from center city you could take the subway out to west philly.

Unfortunately, the area near the University of Pennsylvania: "University City" is not cheap.

Bed and Breakfast accommodations include The Cornerstone (in Powelton Village near Drexel Univ. on Baring Street); the Gables (on Chester Ave., just off Baltimore Ave.) and The Castle (near Springfield Ave., also just off Baltimore Ave.) all three places are historic charming Victorian mansions.

Check out this place. It is right in Fairmount park near the Belmont Plateau, which is a great view of the city. I've driven by it and it looks very nice, but I have not been inside. $20 pp/pn
