Question Bethesda, MD to Philly Area

When are you moving? Sometime this year
Where are you coming from? Bethesda, MD (DC Metro Area)
Why are you moving? Husband's Job
Where will you be working? Philadelphia Navy Yard
Have you been here yet? Yes, only in center city

Will you buy or rent? Rent at first, hopefully buy soon
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? Would love to find 1-2 br apt for around $1000/mo
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up?

Are you married or single? Married
Do you have children? Not yet
Do you have pets? 2 cats
Do you want or need a yard? would be nice, not required
Are you keeping a car? yes, 1
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet?

What do you want to be closest to?
Would prefer short commute to Navy Yard (30min or less ideal)
Would love to live in walkable neighborhood with restaurants, bars, grocery store, library, etc. a few blocks away

Hi Everyone! We are currently renting in Bethesda, MD and love being able to walk to the Metro, shops, restaurants, bars, etc. We are looking for a similar neighborhood in Philadelphia, a short(ish) drive from the Navy Yard.

On the other hand, Bethesda can be a little pretentious and is super expensive. We'd like to find a place where we could some day afford to buy a house. Any recommendations of walkable neighborhoods? Any specific apartments we should look into?

Thanks for all the help!

Media may fit the bill although that rent might only score a 1BR apt. Unless there are other financial considerations at play, you're surely used to much higher rents in Bethesda. Other than that, it's got pretty much everything you're looking for. (I'm not sure if grocery stores are necessarily walking distance.) State Street is the main drag and is close to the county courthouse...convenient if you ever have to pay a ticket or get called in for the inevitable jury duty.

Thanks for the response! We were thinking Media may be good to look into based on location. We like Bethesda, but it's a little too nice... It would be nice to have more middle class neighbors. i.e. more Volkswagens than Porsches..

I picked the $1000 arbitrarily. We're hoping to cut back our rent to save for a down payment.

Any other good picks close to the Navy Yard (PA or NJ)?

Thanks again.
