Default Arch Street?

Are the blocks between about 1600 and 1800 Arch Street safe to walk in the evening? Say you are walking from there to Rittenhouse Square on a Saturday night for dinner, is it going to be really sketchy? Would you feel comfortable walking a dog around there alone? The concern is that the businesses around there are closed at night and so it might be sort of isolated/vulnerable and that the subway station might draw a seedy element. Otherwise, it seems like a great location (and has beautiful architecture).

despite the business's being closed i don't think you'll find it's as dead you'd think there. a lot of people live nearby, it's absolutely fine to walk basically any time.

I agree...that section is pretty quiet. Rittenhouse usually is never a problem. There are a few panhandlers that do hang around in the park, but besides that I wouldn't worry about a thing.

There is no subway station close to 16th-18th Arch, but there is the Phoenix Condos and several high profile office buildings including Comcast and Verizon. Also the 4 Seasons and Embassy Suites and Windsor Hotels a block north with hotel guests walking back and forth plus the Sterling apartment house to the south. No blocks could be less "sketchy" The WAWA may have a panhandler as well as the steam vent at 18th and Arch but they are harmless.

yay! I love this answer. My one friend in Philly cautioned me to stay South of Chestnut, and that he was worried about the "dead zone" near the Comcast Center. He thought I should look elsewhere, but Arch Street *seemed* pretty darn nice. Thanks!!!

Your "friend" sounds delusional and out of touch with reality.

i'm pretty sure that wawa is gone, just like the one by rittenhouse.

the wawa's in this city are dropping like flies, apparently they make better cash out in the burbs with their super wawas and gas stations.
