Yes, Philadelphia is a good food city. Philadelphia is known for high quality cheesesteaks, delis, water ice and italian food dishes of all types.

As many people have said the first thing to do is to browse and walk through Reading Terminal Market. I see from post #12 you have been in Philadelphia for a few days. Did you get a change to see the market yet?

I have a recommendation for an ice cream shop.

I've left Philly already but had a good time, although most of it was apartment hunting; with one space right a couple building downs from The Franklin Fountain, a great little shop (Although I did not choose that area, a little busy and a little noisy, though I love that area, just not for living.)

And yes, I did a quick walk through the Reading Terminal Market -- amazing!

So happy to see the responses here. I have been living in Manhattan for the past 3 years and have been less than impressed with the food here. It's either highly priced or highly overrated or both...and the worst thing, there is very little authenticity about anything in NYC. I miss Philly food and the amazing little 'pocket' places scattered throughout the city. Philly doesn't just have great food but the people are proud of being true and authentic with what they serve...not just about the $$.

I think you'd have to go outside of Manhattan to get authentic food in NYC (though maybe not). It is a pretty damn big place so I'm sure you can find plenty of authentic food throughout the other boroughs.

But yeah, I love the fact that the entire Philadelphia area has so much authentic food, and a lot of variety too.
