It seems the port is on a bit of a roll recently: Philadelphia port sees continued growth in imports

Cool article about some of the buildings lost and the history of the Parkway. The photo of Mayor Rudolph Blankenburg's block looked gorgeous back in the day.

Do all of you like or dislike the Parkway?

I personally think it is beautiful, however, very under utilized. Having baseballs fields and vacant space along one of Philadelphia's most prominent stretches is not that impressive. The area around the Art Museum is my favorite spot in the entire city though.

I live 5 minutes from it. I've always liked it.

Do you realize that the ball field and playground(which may get a makeover to a spray park)can serve a real purpose in that there are tons of young children in Fairmount? There are probably more kids around than there's been in decades. I'm blown away by it. Now, if we can only get a lot of those young families to stay in the city.

Why under utilized in your view? lol. MiA was just there. Many events worth damn happen there. This Friday afternoon/evening is Parkway 100.

I like the Parkway. I like having a place for the kids to play that isn't in the middle of the street.

The Parkway is fantastic for large events (concerts, drafts, etc.) but having playing fields is silly, they should be prestigious venues, like the Barnes or PMoA. There is a huge swath or grass between 21st and 22nd. The area North of Park Towne Place, the 2/4 playing fields on both sides of the Parkway. That is a lot of underutilized space.
I can't think of what I would envision at the moment, but I will get back to you.

Im sure there are other areas nearby in Fairmount that can accomodate a playground or baseball fields. And Penn is not far away either.

Does anyone know if Philadelphia leaders are involved in proposals? I think Philadelphia would be a logical choice. East Coast hub with tons of young talent. Even Pittsburgh would be great.

I do not agree with you at all about the Parkway adjacent ball park( yes, it does get used) and playground. So somehow kids shouldn't be able to walk to, or have their parents take them to, something that's specifically for them in a place where they live ? Remember there are a lot of homeowners who are paying property taxes and other taxes to have that amenity nearby for families...something you don't have(yet). I don't see why it's a detriment to have that ballpark directly across the street from the Rodin. Funnily I'm probably the biggest snob on this board and I don't have issues with it. lol.

Fairmount/Spring Garden are very dense re existing housing. There is no empty ground that I can think of except for the parking lot next to ESP in Fairmount Francisville still has a large section of land just north of Fairmount Ave on 19th St which, if I'm remembering correctly, is slated for development and may include a playground. The other play ground, Roberto Clemente,
18th and Mt Vernon, is actually too small now to comfortably accomodate all the people who are going to it. This summer it was busier than I've ever seen it. There is a basketball court(also heavily used) and combo baseball field and football field next it. Some of that space has been used to create a dog park( greatly needed too). Is there money to expand Clemente playground? Dunno.

That spot you are talking about next Park Towne was originally where the Calder Museum was going...man, I was disappointed when that fell through. And there was some talk about making it a kid park for a while. It didn't materialize.

Most parents are not going to drag a toddler to Penn for recreation.

Can't believe this isn't being talked about here. This would be a game changer and Philly is so perfectly matched up with Amazon's stated desires, it truly amazes me. Would love to see them build up Schuylkill Yards but I'd be happy with the Navy Yard too.

Of course, the pessimist in me says that we'll be skipped over for Atlanta or some other Southern city.

Amazon has a huge warehouse by me work here in New Castle, DE, so there is at least a presence in the area.

Philly as an HQ would be so good for the city. I wouldn't want it at the Navy Yard since there is no viable public transit to it and it is already choked up with car commuters on 95. Agreed that S. Yards would work great, also maybe somewhere along the waterfront might work nicely.
