Welcome to the Borough of Lawnside!

People go to Lawnside to shop. It's thought of as just another town.
But you clearly know better.

This history is what makes Lawnside a "very special case."

I don't know what you're getting at. It's a black town. It's not looked down on or avoided. It's treated like any other town.

I did notice that you chose to ignore my comment about their crooked former mayors who are doing time.

I've been in & out of Camden since the county buildings were on Federal St.

Yeah, sure. . .you know more than me.
I at least know enough to not punish a place for rough luck and a brutal history. If you think what took down Camden is crooked Mayors and mismanagement you're blind. Camden used to a bustling industrial city. Crooked Mayors didn't send those jobs overseas and tank the entire economy. The corrupt politicians just picked the bones clean as the city was destroyed by this country's anti-urban and anti-working class policies of the mid 20th century.

Seriously what's the point of deriding Camden as a hellhole? Why do you have so much hate for a place that's so pathetically unfortunate?

And I don't care how long you've been in and out of Camden. You've clearly never stuck around long enough to see the beauty of its historic streets and neighborhoods. Like rotodome said much of camden is a 5 min subway ride from center city 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. How many currently gentrifying Philadelphia neighborhoods can say that? Not to mention reciprocal tax agreements effectively mean no Philadelphia wage tax if you live in Camden. It's not hard to see the appeal.

Still has a ways to go but I'm optimistic 20 years from now people will feel very different about Camden. You can be negative and hateful if you wish though, i'm done arguing with you.

I think you have a problem. I'm not the only poster to call it a hell-hole. There are many reasons that Camden is what it is. Crooked mayors made it worse. Some day Camden will come back when they get the crime under control. Calling me negative & hateful for saying the obvious is pretty juvenile.

I've walked Federal street to get to offices, probably before you were born. You should get a grip on your rage. I could have said much much worse than I did & it would have been the truth.

Glad you don't plan to continue arguing because I wasn't arguing with you, just telling the truth.

I think you think I'm using the phrase "a very special case" negatively.

I'm not.

Lawnside, N.J., is not "a black town" the way my East Side neighborhood of Oak Park in Kansas City, Mo., is "a black neighborhood" or Prince George's County, Md., is "a majority black county."

It's living history: The oldest African-American(-run) town in the Northeast, whose heritage dates to the days of the Underground Railroad, as depicted on the borough seal. Its creation out of the extinguished Center Township in 1926 was a celebration of that heritage, a nod to "The Physician of the Pines," William Still's father. (I count Kelly Still, one of William's descendants, as a friend.)

If that's not "very special," what is?

Edited to add: What I'm saying is that it's not "just another town." It's a place worth celebrating. I'm guessing that by saying it's "just another town," you're suggesting that because it's black and black-run, most folks would look down at it or avoid it. Shame on them, and maybe you too, for thinking that way.

So because you're old, you automatically know more than me? Yea, because your trips to Camden in the 1950s really ensure a firm grip on the current state of Camden.

How do you guys/ladies feel about the gas/oil business in Philly? I hear it can be very great business wise for the city, bringing in jobs and potentially turning Philly into an energy hub, giving it a competitive advantage. On the downside it creates more pollution and the business can be outright dangerous at times. Do you see this factoring into Philly's future?

It's already an energy hub. If you google "Philadelphia refineries" you will see part of why it is.
