affordable restaurant for group near Kimmel Center
We are going with a group to see Wicked at Kimmel Center on a week night at end of August. There may be 20 - 40 of us (adults and kids). We are seeking a restaurant close by that will not cost a king's ransom. We were hoping for Upstairs at Varalli, but they are closed for summer vacation. Any thoughts? Thanks!

This place is fun.
Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant
They are on 15th Street between Locust and Spruce and have banquet facilities.
One thing - Wicked is at the Academy of Music, not the Kimmel Center. I'm seeing it next week.

Unfortunately, chains are taking over center city. I would not have recommended this restaurant, if it was for one or two couples, but I think it's a good place for 20-40 people. The food is decent (for a chain).

Portofino's - 1227 Walnut. Been there for many many years. It is an old standard in the theatre district.
Carribou - 1126 Walnut. Varied menu. They have a fixed price dinner also. Good location, good food and neat atmosphere.

If you want more than you could care to know about eating in Philly, go to www.chowhound.com and look on the Pennsylvania board.
