We are considering a move to Mt. Airy...specifically E. Gowen Avenue about 2 blocks from the Mt. Airy Train Station. While we like the idea of still staying close to the city, we are somewhat concerned about the safety of that neighborhood. We also have an 8 month old son and want to understand if it's family friendly. We very much want a community and to know/support our neighbors. thanks so much for any advice or thoughts anyone has on that neighborhood!!

This is my neighborhood; I live on the 500 block of E Allens. We've been here for 5 years and have nothing but good things to report. Safety, while generally more of an issue in the city than the burbs, has not been an issue for us. We did have a car theft on our block a few years ago, but that was really it for safety/crime issues. Additionally our daughter is almost two and we plan on staying for the long haul (but admittedly we can probably afford private school for her giving us more school options than others....school is always a big issue for people w kids of course). And in the 5 years we've been here there has been a noticable uptick in the number of families w/ young kids....mine included. Hit me up by direct message with some specific questions and I will be happy to oblige.

LOL, I know I sound like a broken record.I love Mt. Airy! I grew up in Mt. Airy and have lived there off and on my whole life. I`M about to buy a home in West Mt. Airy ,about 10mins from where you are talking about. I agree with G Goo,it`s a great neighborhood. I love how diverse the neighborhood is. Growing up in Philly during the 70`s and early 80`s.Mt. Airy was one of the few neighborhoods that an interracial family could live and no one gave a second look. The only thing that has ever happen to me as far as crime goes.In the late 80`s ,I had a car broken into. You will be fine and you will love all the shops along Germantown ave. Like I always say, drive around at different times of the day and night.I`M sure you will find it as nice as I think it is.

It's a gorgeous neighborhood, I walk down that street every day. I wouldn't hesitate. There's also a great deal to do in the general area for kids. It's fantastic. The sense of community is very strong as well. The only thing I would suggest is that you look into the public school, which I believe for that street in that vicinity is Henry Houston. There are many excellent private schools too, if you want to go that route.

I think it's a great choice for a young family.

I lived in that area (on Devon) for about six years; never once had a problem, even when coming home alone late on the train. It is a lovely neighborhood, tasty restaurants, great to have two train lines and the bus...I miss it!

If you look on greatschools.com the Mt Airy public schools are among the best in the city for both parent reviews and standardized tests.

Hi All,

I am trying to plug in "Mt. Airy" into homes.com and Trulia but it comes up "unrecognized location". The Trulia list just shows me homes in other locations. Any suggestions? Thank you!

I entered the ZIP code - 19119 - in Trulia and it worked. I imagine the same would be true when using homes.com. Place names can be parsed incorrectly; a ZIP code is a lot more straightforward.
