Weighing diversity, cost of living, and public schools, Cheltenham is definitely the winner (provided you can handle the property taxes). Neighboring Springfield and Abington have somewhat smaller, but still plenty sizable African American populations.

Within Lower Merion Township, Ardmore (and to a rapidly-increasing extent, Penn Wynne) have noticeable, middle- to upper-middle class African American communities--somewhere in the vicinity of 10% (LMSD schools are 8%, while the township is 6% as a whole. The one big downside is that Lower Merion is a lot more expensive than those other areas. It also may not be diverse enough for your liking.

I lived and taught and substitute taught in the Montgomery County schools (near Phila.) for years. Cheltenham School District is a place where there is a sizable African American population. Although some are from a lower socioeconomic background, there are many who are from a higher socioeconomic background, well-educated and financially comfortable. A lot of these latter families live in Laverock, an area of Cheltenham that borders Willow Grove Avenue. It is very near Chestnut Hill, which is predominately white.
If you can afford it, you could live in Philly but send your children to one of the many, many private schools in the area! Springside School, at the 'end' of Chestnut HIll and towards Mt. Airy, actively seeks African American girls (and helps with scholarships if unaffordable), as does Chestnut Hill Academy for Boys, which is across the street (Willow Grove Avenue) from Springside.

Why aren't the same people who scream about anybody who mentions wanting to live in a white area on here attacking this poster? HHHHmmmmm.... must be alot of scared people out there. I wonder how long it will take for my post to be deleted ? They always are when questioning, instead of conforming.

The OP specifically asked for a diverse suburb that is African American-friendly. So I think you two are barking up the wrong tree on this one.

Most safe, nice Philadelphia suburbs are "white" suburbs by default, so asking for such would be fairly redundant. Safe, nice, white inner-city neighborhoods, however, are another story, and I do agree that people shouldn't be shot down by sole virtue of not wanting to stick out like a sore thumb. Strength in numbers and all that.

Probably due to he OP's Headder:
Safe & Nice African American Suburbs of Philadelphia?

Most safe, nice Philadelphia suburbs are "white" suburbs by default (Here you imply that "all Black suburbs" are "unsafe" by default !?), so asking for such would be fairly redundant. Safe, nice, white inner-city neighborhoods, however, are another story, and I do agree that people shouldn't be shot down by sole virtue of not wanting to stick out like a sore thumb (???) .
Strength in numbers and all that.
Just some thoughts...

Regarding your first statement, I wasn't implying any such thing. There are simply comparatively few predominantly-black suburbs to begin with.

As for statement #2, I was simply commenting on the double standard frank and hill pointed out. No matter what color you are, there's nothing wrong with not wanting to stick out like a sore thumb in your own neighborhood. I don't see why that's so confusing.
