Pittsburgh has a Fashion week too

Pittsburgh Fashion Week Home Page

Pittsburgh too has a large Creative Class Population a lot from NYC

Pittsburgh is HQ's for Rue 21 and American Eagle (both of which have flagship stores in NYC)

rue21 : About rue21

American Eagle Outfitters - Investor Relations -*AEO History

Pittsburgh has a ton of Boutiques and Shopping Districts

Pittsburgh has 3 dedicated Fashion magazines

Pittsburgh Fashion Magazine PO Box 12794 Pittsburgh PA (412) 606-7978

– Maniac Magazine

Whirl Magazine

I mean if Pittsburgh's industry isn't enough Philly's not going to give her much better. Philly doesn't have NYC fashion industry nowhere close.
Considering that Philadelphia was a center of fashion at one point, I would say you're dead wrong there.

I've got nothing against Pittsburgh and I'm not trying to slight it or anything but since you're coming at Philadelphia, I'm going to point out that things like fashion are exactly what the city was originally a big part of. Like I said... Market East.

No Philadelphia obviously does not have NYC's fashion industry but nowhere else in the US does. LA is probably the only place that comes close and even that is probably more to do with the entertainment industry out there. Philadelphia's industry is nothing to sneeze at. On top of that, as I pointed out, there are plenty of opportunities for people in that industry with the film industry in Philadelphia and with other things.

Hopefully she sees it as an example of one having pride in the history of their metro, and not as me taking a shot at NYC or anything because I really wasn't trying to.

I'm not being a ..., but maybe I am. But you are going around on all the forums asking what life will be like on your current skills and the job that you want. Do you understand that many Americans across the country right now are struggling regardless of where they live? You act like your current job situation is Pittsburgh's fault. Like you expect to be doing major celebrities hair or something, or have people trying to offer you 100K a year jobs on having skills that millions of Americans have. Moving to another city isn't going to help.

This always happens on this forum. Person with some skills, then goes on asking where they will best be employed like the city itself is the major deciding factor. 99 out of 100 it is more on the person and their skills.

I lived in Philly. The livable areas are expensive and the cheaper areas are unlivable.

Enough already.

First of all, don't act like you represent the working folk. There are more than enough in Southeastern PA to represent themselves.

Secondly, Philadelphia is a better market for certain fields and a worse one for others. The fact that it's close to NYC and still has its own industry would in fact help somebody trying to make a living in the industry.

You "lived in Philly", which I'm guessing means you're not from anywhere near there so that makes you an expert huh? It's a damn big city and an even bigger metro area. It's quite diverse in terms of the areas within it and the sections of the city themselves and it's changing even more with each passing year.

You flat out do not know what you're talking about.

Have you lived in many places around the country?

There are actually numerous areas within the Philly metro that are both affordable and livable...esp once one considers the amenities offered within the area. The same cannot necessarily be said for other east or west coast cities where rents and home prices are exorbitant even 20-30 miles outside of the city.

Maybe you misinterpreted what I wrote. Currently I am a hairstylist - that is the job I want and have. I have been a hairstylist for close to five years now, starting out in NYC since that is where I am originally from. I am licensed in two states - NY and PA, possibly 3 within the next month or so. I also hold a teachers license in cosmetology. A little of my background is in NY I was successful freelance artist, Ive worked numerous fashion shows/shoots and had the opportunity to work in NY fashion week in 2008. Ive built a pretty nice portfolio for myself. My reasons for leaving NY had nothing to do with my career, it was the cost of living that drove me to Pittsburgh. MY first year living here in Pittsburgh I maintained all my clientele in NY and traveled to do hair there for an entire year. That becomes very tiring at some point. My reasons for leaving Pittsburgh is not because I am unsuccessful as a stylist, Ive made a very good living for myself here doing what I love but it lacks most things other major cities with a bigger since of fashion/beauty have. For example, there are no hair shows in this city, there are no major brands that have advance education training. Yes Pittsburgh has a fashion week, which Ive worked in but it doesn't not get as much recognition as lets say a Philly or NY show would. If not all, a nice majority of designers, models, hairstylist and MAU's Ive worked with here dream of leaving this city to move to NY to get their "chance". Education is essential for me to further my career as a stylist, my reasons for wanting to move back to a city with a larger fashion/beauty scene. I do believe moving to another city that has multiple schools for advance education, training programs, more businesses that are related to the beauty/fashion industry, a bigger population to market to will help me continue to succeed.

I appreciate your input but I am not blaming any city for the "lack of my success" bc in my eyes I am successful. I am looking to move back to a city with a larger industry so I personally can take my career to the next level.

That guy's just trying to get a rise out of people. Either that or he's a damn moron. Not sure which, maybe a combination of both.

He posted on another thread about how "Philadelphia is the number one city for meatheads" or something along those lines.

Either way, welcome to the area (when you move that is)

Lots of young people who loved living in NYC but couldn't afford the cost of living have moved to Philadelphia for the urban environment...and seem to be pretty happy here.

As far as I know, there are no hair shows in Philly on the level of those in NY, but you can easily hop a train to attend the one(s) in NYC. My sister is a hairdresser...that's what she and her co-workers do.

Exactly Philly doesn't have the "industry" either, the OP will find this out once she's move to Philadelphia.....Only places that have what the OP is looking for are NYC, LA, Chicago, SF and maybe Miami or ATL.....

Philly however does make for much better commuting to NYC than the Burgh...
