caln/thorn are pretty far out there and not near much
I had to shuffle between KOP and Downingtown many of days and its an easy commute. Downingtown is 20 miles, Thorndale 22 miles. 20-30 minutes depending on traffic. 202 is usually wide open between Exton/Downingtown and KOP.
Its just another option to consider for the OP. 1st option should be looking around the 422 corridor Collegeville,Royersford,Trappe
While I'm sure the OP will appreciate your effort in finding that example, they may also want to know that Norristown is not among the more desirable suburbs due to its reputation of crime issues. Perhaps Norristown has improved - others here may know better than me - but there is surely a reason why those rentals are inexpensive by local standards.
I'm sure you are right but still, don't you just love the realtor's description LOL
"Adorable Cape Cod in Fabulous Desireable Area on Lovely Grounds, Featuring...covered Front Porch to enjoy the comings and goings in this quiet neighborhood"
I found a 4 bedroom in Norristown. There were also several 3 bedrooms in Norristown for 1200.
Wow - that's a beautiful house. I was thinking there's hope until I read the posts afterwards. Darn =(
So I'm not sure I understand why the housing out here in Vegas, where there's more money to be made, has better housing options. We live in the newest part of town & in a house only 5 years old. I would think it be harder to find a good price out here - not in PA where the houses are much older. And is the economy better out there? Will we be paying less for utilities & food? After the salary numbers we've been offered & looking at the housing prices, I don't know how a family like ours could survive. We don't splurge, and I even work part time to pay our car payment (which is only because someone totalled our paid off family sized vehicle). We drive modest cars, a dodge & a honda. We only take one vacation a year, if that, and it's back east to see family. We stay in a family home so we spend less on lodging and food. We have a food budget of $500/month for 5 people (one with an allergy). I can't imagine where else we could cut costs. I do have a gym membership, but it's only $20/month. I will cancel that when we move since it's to a local LV gym, but that $20 doesn't go far when we're paying at least $300 more a month on rent. If the bills/gas are higher or the same, at thousands less on the yearly salary, I don't know how we'll do it. Any suggestions or insight as to the day to day cost of living?

Actually looking at the map it is very close to or in West Norriton, not close to downtown Norristown where the bad areas give the whole area a bad name. Part of the low price may be that it is 80 years old and may not be updated. It may also be in the undesirable Norristown school district. I'll do more research and get back to you.
Yeah, this is West Norriton Township, not city of Norristown. Township is good. Link is here. Features Article
I had a friend who lived a couple of blocks from here. Very suburban. nice. Problem is: it IS the Norristown school district. Do you wish to continue to homeschool? The parochial school near here is very popular. It was Bishop Kenrick, but it got merged with another school and I can't remember the new name. One hundred years ago this was the village of Jeffersonville, and it's still cute.

sweet, thanks
And yes, we are looking to relocate for a *possible* transfer to the new VF casino. We have no word on how it's going. We were offered a job at the Sands Bethlehem last year, but the salary offer was very low, even for that area. We didn't know the area very well but knew enough people there between mine & hubby's companies that we were able to get a feel for the area. However, VF/KOP is out of our league of knowledge, even with family around. Most of our family in NE Philly and Vineland don't really know the nitty gritty details like day to day costs, good neighborhoods, crime, etc.

The Casino is scheduled to oen this spring and well under way. It is my understanding it will be signifcantly smaller than Parx, Sugarhouse, Chester, or the other new one yet to be built within Philly which are all in the general area. It is also a resort license and will require memebership
With that being said I still would suggest further west along 422 - look at a map between Collegeville and Reading and you will decent areas/schools and lessor housing costs in general for what you get. the trade off is it more exurban
Best of luck to you (on East Norriton, while some areas are ok, most would be considered less desireable with more crime relative to most areas in and around KOP)
We lived in Jeffersonville for a year. My husband actually commuted to K of P from there. We moved to Virginia for a year after that and then he again worked in K of P and we lived in Downingtown. Jeffersonville wasn't bad for one year but we only lived there knowing that's what it was. We would not have chosen Jeffersonville if we had planned to stay or if we had children. We lived in Downingtown for four years and then moved to Garnet Valley. He commuted to K of P from all three places.
Do not post single listings of homes. While you may be doing so to be helpful, it's not allowed and is considered soliciting. General links, or suggestions, such as, "Try realtor.com and use Jeffersonville as the keyword" are fine. Specific listings are not.
I couldn't find too much in the time I have but the census tract that this house is in breaks down 39% Hispanic, 29% African American, and 27% white.
I am sure a 4 bedroom house in a bad school district is a major factor in the low rent. Who needs a 4 bedroom house if you don't have kids?

You have to understand the area. It's much more of a buyer's market. There are both cheap apartments and cheap houses but this is much more of a buyer's market outside of the cities and the college towns. Newer houses means newer communities, whereas the communities here have existed for decades and plenty for a century or more. That leads to higher prices and less available places for rent.

Reason: removed single listing
