I actually have multiple questions that are not related to each other, well, very slightly. Anyways, I live in a three bedroom apartment. 2 of the rooms and the living room have heaters but 1 of them does not. I live with two other people but mine is the only one that does not get any heat what so ever. It is like 50 degrees in my room and that is from the radiated heat from the other rooms. My room has two windows and a door that is not sealed so cold air from the outside easily comes into my room. What can I do?

Second question is how much does electricity and gas cost if the cost of water, hot water, and heat is included in the rent already?

Thank You

If you rented a place with the knowledge that your room does not have any heating, I'm not exactly sure what your recourse is now.

I know a place needs heat to be considered habitable, not sure if each room needs to have direct access to heat though.

As far as sealing your windows and doors... it's the middle of January, why you've gone on this long in an unheated room without even sealing drafty windows and doors is beyond me. Again I'm sure there's some type of standard that is required of landlords, no idea if he is meeting it or not though.

Personally I'd seal them myself. You can get plastic covers for the windows that you tape on the inside of the window and then blowdry with a hairdryer; it shrinks the plastic creating a seal. As far as the door goes, again you can buy insulating strips and do all of this in like 15 minutes and under 25 bucks. If you don't even want to spend that, old t shirts and tape will get the job done. it's not exactly rocket science, use your hand to feel where the draft is coming in and then plug the spaces where the draft is coming in.

You could buy a space heater for less than fifty bucks to heat the room... but honestly if the room is around 50 degrees with multiple drafts, perhaps just sealing the drafts will make your room 10 degrees warmer or so pushing it into the "livable" range. So perhaps you could go without even a space heater if you roommates crank up the heat and you close off the draft.

As for your second question. Not exactly sure what you're asking. It seems the landlord has a agreed to pay for water, hot water, and heating, and you and your fellow tenants must pay everything else? I assume you are not seeing bills directly and he is just telling you what to pay?

You should not pay bills where you do not see what you are being charged for.

That said gas normally only heats hot water and the stove. If he is paying for hot water, you should probably only pay a few bucks a month for the gas bill.

Electric bill is impossible to tell without more information. Me and my gf use about 40 bucks a month, but it can vary greatly based on what you guys are doing. If the heaters are electric and you guys aren't careful about using electricity the bill could easily rise well over 200 bucks a months.

What do you mean...2 of the rooms and the living room have heaters? Do you mean they have radiators? If your room has no radiator, it's no wonder your room is so cold!

I agree with Phillies...sounds like you need to get a space heater.
