Hi looking to visit Baltimore and Philly. Will do a day trip to downtown Baltimore then head back north towards Philly for the night life. Are there any smaller/safer towns with reasonable hotel prices right outside of Philadelphia? (15-20mins) Don't really want to pay Philly hotel prices. Also, what areas of Philly should I avoid?N, S, W, E??? Thanks

Try the hotels a couple miles south of the airport on I-95.Red Roof,Motel 6,Ramada,Holiday Inn etc.. - Take the Essington exit(rt. 420) bear right and make a right at the first light. Not a very exciting area but its safe(always lock vehicle and take valuables with you to prevent oppurtunist crime). Motel/hotel security near big cities is abysmal.

Good luck.

Best bet for nightlife in Philly is Rittenhouse Square,University City or Old City. Manayunk also has great nightlife but its a little out of the way.15 minutes from Center City.

Coming into Philly get off at Penns Landing exit make a left(Columbus Blvd.) to Dock Street(another left), this will put you in Old City(Liberty bell-Independence Hall and a alot of clubs/restaurants.

Before you settle for the outskirts, why not try priceline.com? My daughter and I got the Omni in the historical section of Philadelphia for under $100 using priceline. It was great being able to walk to a restaurant at night and then being able to walk right into the city the next morning.
