Can u please answer me a question. .

what does "bul" mean? or "bull"??

"that bull over there sells them" "talk to that bull over there, he'll know where to go"

It sounds so utterly stupid when spoken, it makes me cringe. I'm brand new to the city and the reason I ask the blacks is because I've only heard black people in philly use the term...

"Yo, that bull over there is crazy!"
omg, it's like nails on a chalk board. please, if you use this term....stop. It sounds so ignorant. If someone ever in a professional setting used that term would be laughed out of the room.

It's the new version of "homeboy", perhaps showing a level of respect for the guy being referred to.

It's not meant for the office but rather the neighborhood. I'm sure that most people know when (not) to use that expression.

Sounds like you may just be associating with the wrong kind of people.

I found The Urban Dictionary pretty helpful when watching "The Wire". Bull is, according to the UD, a Philly term: Urban Dictionary: bull.

So if Philly cats call their friends bulls, do younger guys (kittens?) call their friends calves?

Really you're new to Philly and telling the residents to stop using a term that's been around for at least 50 years or more??
Okay then......... I say you should get off of the Internet and start telling those who use the term to stop, and why.

Get back to us and let us know how many are on board afterwards.

No it's not new.. & Philadelphians have never called each other " Homeboy "
I may be incorrect but I remember asking an "old head" about that years ago and he stated that back in the 60's when he was a kid, your " bulls" we're your buddies that you played football with or rumbled with. Also when you all were hanging out with your crew or corner boys, " bull" just sounded more rugged to those guys and I guess it's managed to stick around for a few extra decades. lol
