Scranton doesn't seem to fit in that list. I'm not dissing it at all. It just has a different feel than the rest due to its location, built environment, topography and history. I'd say anything south/east of Blue Mountain goes together. North/west of Blue Mountain goes into another group.

First off the state isn't that poor. Parts of the state represent some of the highest wealth and most innovative areas in the nation.

Also the state isn't poor because of the Philadelphia MSA, its poor because of the rest of the state. If you took the 5 county Philly region out of the Pennsylvania the state would go down the toilet.

A friend of mine who was living in the far western end of the state (as in 15 minutes from Ohio) referred to himself as a "crazy East Coast Italian."

This is coming from someone who's never seen the ocean or set foot in Philadelphia.

People seem to draw up their own mental maps however they please.

And sheer ignorance of geography is a problem everywhere. One of my parents' friends found out I was going to school in Vermont and asked me what state that was in. I just shrugged my shoulders and said it was a suburb of Boston, sort of.

My friend and I were walking back from lunch one day and stopped at an intersection. There was a lady talking on her phone. She stopped us and asked, "Excuse me, this is considered East Coast or West Coast?"

I see no reason for the state to be split up in the first place. If we divided America strictly by subculture, we would end up with hundreds upon hundreds of little states. Even Delaware could be split in two on such a basis.
