I'm dealing with a possible job offer in Philly with very strong potential (just a very slow sector!). I'd like to start considering my options now. I'm 26, female, and love filling out self-centered questionnaires like the one below.

When are you moving? Hopefully late June
Where are you coming from? Baltimore
Why are you moving? Job
Where will you be working? University City
Have you been here yet? Yes, but limited to Center City East area.

Will you buy or rent? Rent
If buying, are you looking for a house or a condo? How much can you spend?
If renting, are you looking for an apartment, a townhouse or loft? How much can you spend? 600 with roommate, 800 if alone. I tend to prefer the character of a townhouse, but I wouldn't rule out apartment living.
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? See above.

Are you married or single? Do you have children? Single, no kids.
Do you prefer public or private schools? Don't care.
Do you have pets? None
Do you want or need a yard? Nope
Are you keeping a car? No, I do plan on getting rid of it.
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Activity but not crazy college students. I'm more of the bar hopping, rec sports, lets go on a hike, type.

What do you want to be closest to? Should I even consider living in University City? I'm fine with living a bit further from work as long as I have a relatively easy commute. I'm with walking a few blocks to various train stations though.

Do you want to live with people of a similar age, race, religion or sexual preference or do you prefer a diverse neighborhood? Similar age (not a big college or "family" area)

Coke or Pepsi? I don't drink soda.

You might want to check out South Philadelphia/Passyunk area - you should be able to find a roommate situation in a row home in your budget. You can take the Broad Street Line to the Market-Frankford Line or trolley to get to University City. I think you'll find others in your age and interest group in this area.

I would suggest staying in the University City area.. it will be the easiest for you if you are going to be working in University City.

Here's a link for something to get you started on prices and apartment searches in University City.

You are lucky to be so close. Drive up for a weekend and stay over Saturday night (but not downtown it will waste too much time) Then explore, explore . and explore with your car. Cover as much area as you can. Highlight areas on a map that you like and then go home and research them.

Thanks. I am driving up next weekend and plan to look around. I really don't want to limit myself to University City, but I don't want to create a commute nightmare for myself either.

Here is another website. Philadelphia PA Apartments for Rent | Philadelphia Apartments | Philadelphia Rentals Anything in Center city will be an easy commute by public transportation but your budget may be a little short unless as suggested you find a one room in a row house. Also a studio in one of the older High rises in Washington Sq west may be available in that range.

Don't think of it as limiting yourself to University City though if you find a great place there. It's a nice neighborhood and really, since its so easy to move around the city, you can still avail yourself of everything the city has to offer.

University City is a small island surrounded by bad neighborhoods. Decent housing tends to be very expensive unless it is on the fringe and then the neighborhood is sketchy. Center City is much larger and will offer much more selection of lower cost apartments in safe and decent areas.

So I've noticed! I'm used to block by block good/very bad areas in Baltimore, so the street views and safety maps go a long way for me. I'll certainly have a better perception of where I'd like to be after I explore this weekend.
