Well if you aren't looking in CC then I agree with Summer, NoLibs is what you're looking for. I'd say Callowhill area as well but there are few rentals in that area.

Also, I too did initially look for space there in the NoLibs/Fishtown area, didn't really find anything to my liking so I ended up looking for anything, anywhere that was suitable; so I would advise to just spread your search all over really and stay away from busy streets like Market, Broad, Walnut, etc. if you're looking for quiet. For the time that I had searched, NoLibs seemed to have offered very little rentals (unless you don't mind renting a room out, some offer a whole floor as well) summer is the time to be looking I've found and places go up 30-60 days in advance, so some of these listings are for August and even September.

And I'll add that a lot of places won't (in my case, none would) deal with me long distance. I just moved here from CA, luckily I had some friends nearby Philly to stay with.

Having found some photos from the top of city hall I may have to rethink that. It does look about as flat as Tampa! No signs of hills anywhere in the photos. But having lived in DC many years ago and spending time in the Summers in hills around Harrisburg, Hershey, etc. I know hills and mountains can't be that far away. How far are they?

West Philadelphia and Northwest Philadelphia have some very hilly areas. Just the areas around Center City, South Philly, and North Philly are very flat. Look around Spruce Hill in West Philadelphia or Manayunk in Northwest Philadelphia on google maps.
