If the schools and safety for your family is very important, you have to stay away from the city. Take a look at this thread.. to see how bad the crime is in Philly. Its real. I put 45+ years in the city.. Its fine for single people who want the bar scenes but for raising a family you want safe, clean areas with ground and clean air.

Besides the schools issue, that's nowhere near universally true.

And neither is this statement.. But that don't stop people from saying untrue things.. Ya following yet?

Both South Philadelphia and University City are fantastic... if you are going to be working in the city then definitely LIVE IN THE CITY... there is no better lifestyle. The suburbs are boring and soulless. There is nothing better than being in the city.

If you bothered to read my earlier post, you'd see I called summers out for his similarly close-minded statement.

I don't see how/why this should be a contest.

That's ridiculous, not to mention incredibly unhelpful for people who are unfamiliar with the city (not to mention your posting antics).

well, the way I see it is this. Other people have opinions and I am entitled to mine too. I was kidding about the balancing obviously. I was telling my 45+ year experience of the city.. Sorry if it was not as positive one. Im trying to save others the same thing we experienced.. I tell the truth , I don't wear rose colored glasses. If a place is nice I will say it. If not I will say it too. Not all the burbs are nice and safe either.. And Ill tell ya that

Lets try to get this thread back on track.

20 minutes within Univ City knocks out 90% of the suburbs. Sounds like your bext best at least initially would be to look for something in the Center City neighborhoods.Rittenhouse Square,Old City,Society Hill,Washington Square,Fitler Square,Logan Square,Graduate Hospital. As short term as possible with the idea of exploring where you would like to live longer term.

One thing to keep in mind about this region is that there is a small but prominent not so nice inner ring element surrounding the city, in just about every direction. Approximately a mile or 2 thick and then the middle class and wealthy suburbs go on for miles and miles. Until things eventually change and they will Center City is kind of like an oasis for young professionals, hipsters, wealthy retirees, then ring of poverty/crime/bad schools, then the suburbs are just fantastic. For the most part the further into the suburbs you go, the newer and nicer the QOL is.

Good luck.

I agree with a lot of these point but you will never get me to agree that University City is a great place to raise a kid; starter home with two adults, maybe but that area still has a very long way to go. I suggest walking around there in the summer when college kids are gone and the movie theater, bowling alley and the playgrounds are over run with flash mobbers.
