It seems like most people on this board would describe most black muslims as the "fake Muslims" you're talking about. It seems like the black muslims are more or less associated with being fake, criminal activity, ghetto/hoodratness, and other negative connotations.

The notion there are a lot of black Muslims in Philadelphia because all or most of the black men have been to prison is down right offensive. There has always been a black Muslim presence, yes there are a large group of men who converted while in jail but there is also a large number of Muslims born in to Islam and also a large numbers of blacks never in jail who are converting to Islam. I've worked with a lot of brothers who have never been in jail who are native born Black Americans. I've gone to school in the 70's and 80's with Black Muslims. So to say most Black Muslims or Muslims are recent immigrants or former prisoner is incorrect. There are strong Black Muslims in Germantown, North Philly, West Philly and South Philly. There has always been a Nation of Islam presence but most Black Muslims are not in the Nation, Most Blacks are Sunni, or other like Shia or Sifi. The Nation is not really Islamic they are Islamic like they don't follow the same school of beliefs such as God(swt) appearing in the Person of Master W. Fard Muhammad,
There is a big Muslim community of Black Muslims around 52nd and Market. There was a large Black and immigrant Muslim community in South Philly close to 5th and Snyder but many of them fled to Canada due to after 9/11 when they started arresting and deporting Muslims who were in fact US citizens. There is a book Muhammad's Ghost about the Muslim community when the police raided and desecrated a Mosque, they also out government paid people to spy on members the government paid over $200,000 for information that was incorrect. Many families were broken up when one parent was deported.
There has always been a Muslim presence in Philadelphia, Pa there are a lot ofBlack women converts who have never gone through the corrections department Then there also is a large immigrant communities there has been a large Asian population in South Philly. There is are at least two big Asian mosque in South Philly one around 17th street and one on Washington Ave. So I reject the notion that all or most Black Muslim males are ex cons.
