What zip codes should one avoid when looking for a reasonable rental in South Philly? I know there is a school called Masterman. Is it in a good area? If the rental range is about 700-850, can a decent place be found?

19146 below Washington Av is pretty bad but 19146 north of Washington is good and gets even better as you go north. Masterman is north of CC in Spring Garden but accepts students from all over the city if they are smart enough. Google it.

There isn't any particular zip code in South Philly that one should avoid. The 4 zip codes are 19145, 46, 47, and 48. Each have good and bad parts. It's much more important to focus on a particular intersection when looking for apartments. You should be able to find some decent for $700-850 depending on what you are looking for (are you looking to rent an entire row home or just a bedroom?).

I lived in 19145 for years (17th and McKean) and went to Masterman in the 80's taking to 2 bus on 16th street or the Broad Street subway.

When we first moved into there, it was all Italian...but the white flight to New Jersey occurred in the late 80's/early 90's and now it's VERY diverse...and that's putting it nicely. All the gentrification is occurring on the other side of broad street...it seems like...like 13th and passyunk area...

That people that I know who still live there insist that the neighborhood will improve...but they've been saying that for a while...before my mom sold their house, she kept waiting for a Casino mogul like Donald Trump to possible develop land nearby and open a casino which would increase property prices...but last year she finally gave up

I live not too far from 17th & McKean - a nice house around there went from being worth about $40k 10 years ago to $250k today.

Not sure what your friends are waiting for but this neighborhood is a hell of a lot nicer now than it was 10 years ago.
