Hello from Pittsburgh!

I've lived in western Pennsylvania for most of my life, and a few other areas around the country. My girlfriend, on the other hand, is from the Philadelphia area and I've been out there a few times with her recently. She grew up in Upper Southampton area, and now lives out here.

When we went back to her old house, to me the entire area seemed pretty nice to me. She seems to think Lower Southampton (Feasterville/Trevose?) and Bensalem were really bad, rundown areas and to me they seemed relatively nice. Are these areas really that bad or is she grossly exaggerating these anecdotes?

Trevose, for one, is not run down. I've spent a lot of time there, always had very pleasant experiences.

While none of those areas are exactly upscale neighborhoods I can't think of any area in there that is particularly bad either. In your thread title you mentioned Bristol which is considered one of the metro's "armpits". Bensalem is a very large and diverse township with both low class and upper middle class neighborhoods but nothing approaching slums.

she is absolutely incorrect. Feasterville/Trevose is a very nice solid area with nice homes, stores and very little crime. Bensalem has a bit more crime but its a nice area too.

They are fine areas but not what I would call "pretty" neighborhoods. Some areas are a bit run down but just aesthetically.

Not even close. As a lot of other posters have suggested, it's not the most picturesque location in the Philadelphia area but it's very safe, has decent schools and is solid pretty much all around. Parts of Bristol Boro, Bristol Twp & Bensalem can be iffy, but still probably safer than 90% of the City of Philadelphia. Unless your g/f is looking for something really upscale and nice (in which case you can look a little farther north in Northampton Twp, Newtown & the Makefield Twps or west in Huntingdon Valley, Horsham or Upper Dublin) Lower Southampton/Trevose is not a bad place.

Lower Southampton is alright and seems fairly stable. Significant parts of Bensalem (and much of Bristol) have declined over the years, but they're hardly ghettos. Rather, they're settling into "lower-middle class territory"--not exactly aesthetically pleasing, but not really dangerous, either.

Bristol can get rough in parts, but some parts are still nice. Bensalem is very large, so hard to pinpoint an area exactly, but most of it is solidly nice and middle class. Two of my roommates are from Bensalem.

Southampton and Northampton are nice too of course. Northampton slightly more wealthier but whatever.

Most people have no idea but there is a section of Bristol Borough (not Bristol Township however) north side of town near the river called Harriman that is absolutly charming and quite upscale as well. I don't know any portion of Bristol Township that isn't low down although not as bad as Chester or Camden of course.

I agree! There are some great sections of Bristol right by the river.

There are also some fine parts of Bristol Township (it is a massive township), especially closer to Falls Township around Conwell Egan High, there are some large houses. I dated a girl from here and her house/neighborhood was gorgeous
