Thanks for the link, tintin ... gives me an idea what my neighbors are being assessed for.

I find it interesting that a four story multi-unit apartment building - get this: with a retail commercial rental space on the ground floor - across the street and up the block from me will only have to pay $1,000 more per year than me in property taxes, and I own a single family semi-detatched "twin" home.

I'm gonna contest the evaluation ... I may not win, but I'm going to appeal nonetheless.

But ... does it have to be 200%??? When the electric utilities went up, they went up, like, 10%.

Speaking strictly for myself, I came out of a period of unemployment, and finally did find employment ... but at a lower salary I was accustomed to earning. When I bought my house a dozen years ago I did not go above my budget and was living within my means.

I guess the next course of action is to dispute the assessment, and fight it. I'm going to have to contact my City Councilperson.
Yeah... Blackwell's not gonna care if you live east of 50th Street.

79% increase. A little over $2,000 more per year. Philadelphia, sometimes you are very difficult to love.

I am not trying to be an a$$t here but in an area that has rebuilt itself and housing values have seriously climbed, what do you guys think? You can live in a home with really nice assessed value for a bargain basement tax cost forever? Pony up and be happy you guys are still paying nothing for taxes an relatively expensive homes.

Good point. It's natural that taxes would increase when the home values increase. The issue here is twofold:

1. How about phasing in the increases as opposed to sudden massive ones so people can adjust.

2. How about collecting the hundreds of millions from the scofflaws first. After that money is collected, then, if necessary, get more from the law abiding folks. Honestly, it shocks me that I'm the only one here that seems bothered by that. Does nobody else understand how completely unfair that is or have you all grown so accustomed to corruption and incompetence that you just accept it?

Nutter did just announce a plan to get back more unpaid taxes, for what it's worth

The whole scenario just makes my blood boil.

I feel the same way.

I'll believe it when I see it. And by "see it" I mean large scale prosecutions, confiscations and wage garnishments of scofflaws.

I'm going to have to agree with Frank here... although the "phasing in" could be a decent idea and collecting unpaid taxes is definitely a good idea on mancat's part. Nevertheless, I don't really see what the big hoopla is all about.

I've never lived anywhere where reassessments were "phased in". Your property value goes up, you pay up with your next tax bill. Period.

Welcome to the real world.
