It's a shame they never took 90 out further east on the NJ side. The Pulaski highway would have hurt neighborhoods when it was proposed, but those neighborhoods in the lower northeast are in decline now. Both of those defunct projects were tied in with the bridge - hence the 12 people that drive it a day.

Wish this went all the way to 309 through Philly and to the NJ Turnpike on the Jesrsey side Though I use the betsy to the NJ Turnpike often heading up the NJ Turnpike. Is the fastest route IMHO

Actually, Center City is basically in the center of the metro/CSA. You have South Jersey to the east, southeast, and northeast.. then South Philly/South Jersey to the south.. North Philly to the north, as well as Bucks and Northampton.. NW Philly to the northwest as well as Montco, Berks, and Lehigh... West Philly to the west as well as Delaware and Chester counties, and then Southwest Philly to the southwest as well as southern Delco and New Castle County in Delaware. How is that not being in the center?

Now to clear up a myth, PA is most definitely not less diverse than New Jersey, and Southeast PA is most definitely not less diverse than South Jersey. I suggest people take a look around some of the SE PA neighborhoods around the city sometime. I especially enjoyed the idea that it's only Norristown, etc that are all that diverse. Upper Darby, for one example, is probably the most diverse part of the metro outside of Philadelphia. As for the rest of the state, how many former industrial cities/towns does PA have? Is it even possible to count them all? Not to mention every major city in PA is diverse. Harrisburg, Lancaster, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, all three of the Lehigh Valley, I'm sure York as well. No idea about Erie but I would assume they have diversity as well. How many lower-middle class/middle class neighborhoods are there in PA, even in this metro alone? Delco, to name one county, is full of them. Now New Jersey? How many places in North Jersey are being gentrified due to Manhattan? Then you have the upscale burbs, you have parts of South Jersey, etc. The two states are probably about the same, just for different reasons. 10 years ago, it would probably be New Jersey. Today though? Not so much.

South Jersey does hurt Philadelphia, as do Bucks and Montco, without a doubt. They've siphoned jobs, retail, entertainment, businesses, and residents. Watch local news or local sports. The majority of the commercials are for places in Bucks, Montco, or South Jersey. They almost killed the city.

Agreed. I'm glad it was Ed Bacon and not Robert Moses.

The creation of the suburbs almost killed every city in this country from the 60s to the 80s... this is nothing unique to Philadelphia.

The unsafe, unclean, bad school environments almost killed cities. People moved out of the cities for a better life. If the cities offered everything everyone wanted to raise a family, the burbs would never have flourished over time.
