Not according to Census data. Between 2000 - 2010 the city's black population was almost unchanged and there is evidence that toward the end of the decade that the black population began to decline. The white population did decline during that same time period as well. Population growth in the city was entirely attributable to growth among asians and non-caucasian hispanics. It's not 1970 any longer.

Just read the story. What a piece of crap.

Was waiting to see who would post. Not exactly shocked by who it was. This story is ridiculous at best and racist at worst. A failing news source desperately trying to do anything to get attention.

Here is a counterpoint of sorts to the article.

Philly Mag cover: Whites must criticize blacks more | Philadelphia City Paper | 03/02/2013

This article should be renamed "Being SWPL in Philadelphia." I bet this guy only drives three major thoroughfares in the entire city: Lincoln Drive, Kelly Drive and City Ave.

This article is more or less geared to white liberals who are afraid to say what they often think. So he uses these little anecdotes to communicate ideas that he would not really want attributed to himself:

"I talked to a guy named Harry. 'When did Philadelphia become a bad place to live?' I asked. 'When the n****** came,' he responded. I was shocked and appalled. Mortified and petrified. But at the same time, it's a fair question...did black people ruin Philadelphia??"

Plausible deniability, sarcasm and irony is coin of the realm for these jerk-wads.

That being the case, this woman's quote appears more like a sock puppet for Huber's own mindset than a meaningful representation of anything about Philadelphia.

The article, in fact, is not really about "white people" at all. It is, save for n-word dropping John, about rich and middle class white people. Philadelphia Magazine in 2011 declared Mummers "10 Things We Need To Get Rid Of" not so much, I think, because some mummers do or say racist ****. And I'm guessing Huber would probably be just as flummoxed by working class or poor whites on the other side of Front Street. These are whites that might say horrible things about blacks but who, unlike middle and upper class whites, felt they had to compete for evermore scarce resources in a declining city.

Playing the devils advocate here but not everyone may see the city in the same light as you do.. Think about it. Whether the article is not what you may think, obviously someone sees it that way..

I'm not sure who on the forum may have said that the Temple area was totally safe. Certainly the university has made a lot of investments on and off campus over the last couple of decades and continues to have a vested interest in continued revitalization. Certainly, someone is staying in those newer dorms.

You may be partially right. According to the following census link, the white population is indeed falling. However, the black population remains virtually unchanged.

Population of Philadelphia County, PA - Census 2010 and 2000 Interactive Map, Demographics, Statistics, Quick Facts - CensusViewer

If anything, the city is becoming more multicultural, including people who identify with more than one race or ethnicity. I might even speculate that many of those white households moving to the suburbs are doing so for better schools, something which we can all agree is an issue. On the other hand, younger professionals, empty nesters and - per the portion of the Philly Mag article discussing Fairmount - even families are continuing to move in or near the various Center City and University City neighborhoods. I would bet that the majority of them are white.

Worst. Magazine. Ever.

Simplistic and contrived. Whites in Fairmount are not exactly "middle class" and poor blacks in NP are not representative of all blacks in the city. This guy clearly thinks about race wayyyy too much (to the extent of who he holds the door for? wtf?) and that in and of itself prevents equality.

City Paper nailed it:

"People will only think you "simply discussing race" is racist if you, like Huber, treat black people like inscrutable extraterrestrials whose moral shortcomings might be responsible for their own poverty. To the extent that whites do not discuss race more it is because they do not want to address important pieces of context like, say, history. It's more that Huber wants to have a particular sort of conversation about race.

Philadelphia Magazine can sometimes not help but to brazenly stroke the fragile if well-resourced egos of its elite readership--and, and on its worst days, stoke their pathetic prejudices and insecurities too."

And so did one of the ladies in the story:

“No,” she says. “There’s no need to be careful if you treat people as human beings.”
