West Philly is far better than North Philly. Parts of it are very safe, beautiful and prosperous. I can't think of ANY parts of North Philly that qualify as any of those three.

some names of people who lived in north philly "back in the day"
elkins, widener, forrest. people with lots of money that they made (rather than inherited) lived in north philly and many moved to the suburbs. many of the jews that lived in north philly fled to elkins park, merion, etc. a lot of the white working class fled to the northeast. nonetheless, the basic point that it was a thriving place is true as is that it was hardest hit by the decline in manufacturing. both of Philadelphia's baseball teams got their start in north philly, movie producers (most famously lubin) lived there, etc.

then you don't know north philly. northern liberties, spring garden, and fairmount are fairly prosperous parts of north philly and as safe was west philly. on the whole, I think west philly is in better shape though but to say that NONE of north philly is inaccurate.

69th st is in upperdarby. west philly has 52nd st which is slightly nicer than broad and erie but still pretty run down.
seems like the movie theater is always having problems at 40th and walnut with the nightlife. anyway, yes, it's nicer, and certainly temple is taking its cues from what's happened in university city.

Philadelphia police and University of Pennsylvania police are investigating a double shooting that occurred at a University City movie theater.

It happened around 7:00 p.m. inside The Bridge located along the 4000 block of Walnut Street

The Daily Pennsylvanian :: Flash mobs may reflect need to 'see and be seen'

I know they used to have problems with all the thugs milling about at 40th and walnut, maybe it's gotten better.
i would have expected problems at the pearly but aside from opening day there it's been quiet.
It seems like people always need to put down some other place to make their own place look better.

The Flash Mob thing is OVER. Why are you posting articles from 2010?

Yeah. I thought about those areas as I was posting. I guess technically they're in North Philly, but nobody really thinks of them that way. They're seen more as an extension of Center City's influence these days.
