I am starting a new job at a nursing home on West Schoolhouse lane in philadelphia. I am trying to decide whether to do the drive into the area or take the train in every day.

When I went for the interview I took the train. The R5 specifically and got off at 30th street station and transferred to the Chestnut hill west line and got off at Chelten Ave and walked to school house lane.

After doing some research, it seems like I could continue taking the R5 to 30th and transfer on to chestnut hill west. Or the other option is do the same thing but take chestnut hill east line and get off at the germantown station. From google maps the walk is the same distances from each station and about 10 minutes.

I would just like to know if one station or area is safer/better than the other. I felt safe walking there mid-morning but my concern is I will be going in real early in the morning and leaving late at night.

I can drive there but prefer not to deal with 76 and kelly drive.

Thanks!

It's a more pleasant and safer feeling walk from the CHW Chelten Station than from the CHE Germantown station, and it seems to me that it would probably be shorter as well. There's also a decent coffee shop close to the CHW Chelten station.
Definitely the better option IMO.

I agree with rotodome about CHW over CHE. If you don`t mind walking a couple extra blocks. you could get off at the Queen lane stop. That is a very busy and safe stop.

Queen Lane would be much further and it's a little seedier walk. CHW Chelten stop is the closest.

Wissahickon ave is seedier then chelten ave? That's a new one on me. If it's the nursing home I'm thinking about , it is a deference of two blocks.
Wissahickon ave is the dividing point of West Germantown and East Falls.

The Chelten Ave West stop is the better option and has the better atmosphere. The opposite of Wayne Ave on Chelten is very unattractive and too many undesirables.

I predict that within 2 weeks you will come to your senses and be back in your car.

Some pics of both.If you look on a map. school house lane is in the middle of both stations. Good luck on whatever you do.

No, but the walk up Coulter from Wissahickon is. If you go up Wissahickon to School House, it's more like four extra blocks (assuming it's the nursing home between Wayne and Greene).

They have had problems with homeless people in that stairway. I would not want my family members at that train station at night. To each is own.
