Question Looking into neighborhoods of Philly

Hi Ya,
Hubby and I are relocating to Philadelphia as soon as we can sell our house here in California (It may be a looooong wait, sigh!) My husband is retiring from the military.
We are in our 40s, no children, would love to have good mass transit as well as parking. We have 2 smallish dogs. Our dogs would need a small yard to do their business.

We are looking for an area that obviously isn't crime infested but since we are childless, schools are no big deal.

We are looking to rent for a year while we look into surrounding areas to buy a home. We used to live in San Francisco as well as New York and LA so we are very aware of city life.
Could you recommend some areas to look into as far as rentals. I look on Craigslist but I have no idea if the neighborhood is ok or not.
Any help is mucho appreciated!
Cheers!
Shanny

I would recommend Fairmount by the Philadelphia Art Museum. Nice, walkable community, good neighborhood, close to the Center City (downtown) core.

Northern Liberties....You can find properties with yards, and every business is insanely dog friendly - including banks, bars, whatever. Also, even if you didn't have a house with a yard, there are tons and tons of fields and parks to walk your dogs. There are lots of cool, young (mid 20s to early 30s) people, and the bars around here are my fav. There are two amazing Belgian bars within walking distance of my house, but Philly has like 6 belgian bars at the moment... The fairmount area is a little boring for me, but Northern Liberties is too secluded for others. I kind of like that aspect of it.

Fitler Square,Logan Square,Fairmount/Art Museum area,Rittenhouse Square,Washington West, Queen Village,Bella Vista,Old City,University City,Spruce HIll, although parking is a challenge in all of these great neighborhoods.

Still iN the city but more suburban in nature, parking more prevalent. East Falls, west Mt Airy,Chestnut HIll,Roxborough,Manayunk,Packer Park(extreme South Philly)+ last but not least Far Northeast Philly.

Best suburban towns imo are Doylestown,West Chester, Media,Wayne and the Mainline towns.

Good luck
