You could always take a "wait and see" approach with the schools--switching the kids out to private/parochial if/when they no longer meet your expectations. That's what I'd do if I were in your situation, given how much you seem to love the Area.

Not a whole lot beyond its generally lackluster reputation. My (childless) uncle lives in Drexel Hill and many (but by no means all) of his neighbors send their kids to private schools. UDResident was the go-to guy on Inner Ring Delco, but unfortunately, I don't think he posts here any longer. I'm sure some other folks here can help you out though.

I lived in Garden City for 22 years, and my section is NOT a dump. They are smaller homes on small plots of land that many people opt for because the taxes are relatively low and you get a wonderful school district. The "inner" portion of GC are often referred to as "the projects." They are VERY small homes built for returning WWII vets and have not been kept up. And btw, Swarthmore is also "next to"

Soulsurv - I would have to disagree. There seems to be a general consensus that Wallingford and and Swarthmore have beautiful homes & good school districts. However, more than a few people told us that these 2 areas are going a bit downhill & if it weren't for the beautiful homes- they would already be seen as "average" places to live. Please don't think I'm trying to be insulting. I don't have a dog in this race, yet. I'm just repeating what I've been told.

What do Wallingford and Swarthmore have going for them besides some expensive houses and a good school district? I think they would do much better if the main line didn't exist, but the main line surpasses anything these 2 towns have to offer.
