drove past that area the other day (Waze app took me all through that area going home instead of straight down Baltimore Ave).

It is some of the more beautiful areas of Philadelphia....I'm loving the incredible foliage (and barely any weeds!!) in front of every home....

46th between Baltimore and Spruce is particularly beautiful, though the numbers just above and below that are also great. There's Larchwood in the mid-forties. Before I moved, I had discounted living south of Baltimore Ave, but I had some walks between Baltimore and Springfield, 47th to 49th, and was amazed at how well-maintained and immaculately landscaped most of the properties are there.

To the OP - I just spent the summer living right around the corner from there. I passed by that block nearly every day, and never felt unsafe. Of course, I didn't do it alone, after dark, as a petite female. But I would pass by there with my husband at night. (Ugh, I sound so old-fashioned. But look - why invite trouble?) There were always a lot of young people with children around. Coming from a very safe suburb, I'd live there in a heartbeat, now that I've experienced it first-hand. Also: I had once thought I wouldn't want to live directly next to Clark Park, because I'd heard there were always people playing loud boomboxes. I didn't find this to be true, passing through there daily. Sometimes there's a drum circle. Once there was a rally.

I hope you consider it. There is crime on occasion, but it now seems to me to be pretty isolated. Much like any other part of the city.

I lived at 46th and Springfield for a year, where that shooting took place. It felt completely safe and I was surprised to hear about the shooting. South of Baltimore it starts to get shady when you go south of Chester and west of 47th. 45th and Chester is a nice spot that I wouldn't be concerned about. Lots of UCD bike security, University of the Sciences driving security, police presence, UPenn buses dropping people off. Just be cautious late at night and don't walk around with a smart phone out.
