As for Philly being lumped into NYC's MSA, I say no. Aren't they second fiddle to them already?

I was just thinking about this.....i was going to make a new thread of this but i remember it was one here already....i just happen to be on wikipedia (I know not the most trustworthy) It gave some interesting numbers that if CT-NJ-NY-PA combined the population would be 29 Million...how would something like that work given that Philadelphia is already a major city with its own metro region ? seems like NJ is up for grabs in some counties lol

No

It's been this way for decades. That's what makes up the Megapolis. Keep in mind that the Megapolis is creeping south to Richmond. Another megapolis is forming from Charlotte to Raleigh in NC. When the two connect the Megapolis will then stretch from Boston to Charlotte.

Philly isn't second fiddle to NYC for the simple reason that it doesn't play a subservient role to the New York metropolitan core.

Superiority is in the eye of the beholder, but subservience can be ascertained from objective data. In this case, the numbers just aren't there.

WRONG. once high speed rail really takes off, Philly will be integrated into NYC like never before. You will have commutors who live in Philly for affordability, and commute every morning by high speed rail into Manhattan. When the time it takes is cut down to about 45 minutes, they will truly be integrated into one metro. Not to mention once automated cars take off and travel faster than now... technology of the future will bring NYC and Philly closer and closer together. Remember, there was a time when Newark was a different metropolitan area than NYC. Now they're practically one city. same will happen to philly

You can see the NYC skyline looming from Newark, it has a 24hr subway connection to the city, and you STILL don't have many folks lining up to live there for cheap rent commuting..

That's because Jersey City and Hoboken fill that void.

Indeed. And there are plenty of other closeby contenders for the next hot commuter bedroom city.
And this is why a new high(er) speed (and doubtlessly pricey) rail connection will NOT suddenly make Philly & NYC "practically one city"!
