That's not great news at all. I will anxiously await news of what will replace it.

It'd be nice if Philly got the equivalent to the City Target in Chicago on State Street. The State Street store, which opened in 2012 and bannered as City Target, is very pleasant on the eyes and worth checking out when in Chicago.

However, Target in general has a bigger presence in that market, with SuperTargets present in the suburbs over there, and many two level Targets as well, some built on top of garages, where land is scarce.

In somewhat related news to the Kmart closing in Philly, Sears is closing their State Street store in Chicago.

Chicago also has a Best Buy in the Michigan Mile area which is aesthetic and popular with visitors, and one in So. Loop, and the chain, in general, apparently has recovered from it's 2012 woes. I think Philly's downtown can support atleast one.

I always thought it odd that Kohl's is the big holdout for a downtown servicing store over there or in any city. Kohl's is even a Midwestern based chain from WI so a downtown store in Chicago, I'd expect to make some sense. What is one to do with expiring Kohl's cash when visiting and shopping over there... But I digress.

Yeah, and if wishes were horses...

A Target would be a nice fit because it's nicer than KMart, but still can provide basic needs and reasonable prices for a lot of the area. There area lot of problems with the Gallery and Market East in general as has been pointed out, but simply closing a store won't do much.

I agree with you and some of some other posters.
While I really want to see the Gallery being "cleaned up" (By cleaning up means make the atmosphere more comfortable for some people), I will greatly miss K Mart. Yes, I would love to see Bloomies there.
But Kmart closing will create more hassles for us who live in CC. I OFTEN pass by Kmart while waiting for the train to get some snacks or giftcards on the way to my work in the burb.

So my wish list would be like what everybody said City Target, K Mart or something equivalent for our basic needs. There are only so much that CVS and Rite Aid can fulfill.
