It's pretty much exactly the same now as it was then, IMO.

This was before lots of adjoining areas started gentrifying.

Something I found odd at the time - lots of scared white people from NE Philly and the burbs who were under the mistaken impression that Center City was a lot worse than it actually was. I found their fear to be sad and pathetic, even back then.
What was Market East like back then?
