Hi all,

I am currently renting a 5th floor unit in a condo building with a dozen or so floors.

My understanding is that the building is scheduled to have the roof replaced, starting in August. This process is expected to last 1-2 months.

I was wondering what to expect, noise-wise, in case anyone has experience with this. How loud does the work get, from the perspective of someone living ~7 floors down form it? And if I should expect noise, should I expect that it will last the full 1-2 months, or just be restricted to specific phases of the project?

Thanks!

I would be very surprised that you hear much of anything.

Not to mention, they will only work during the day, so if you are at work, you probably won't even notice.

I was living in a building that was constantly having work done to the structure, and it wasn't a big deal whatsoever. I hardly noticed it, save a few days of the year.

This is all really helpful info, thanks! And it sounds like a more tolerable scenario than I anticipated.

How do the people / debris / new materials get up and down? Do they use the roof access doors inside the building, or do they use cranes / high reaches / other outdoors equipment? Just curious.

On a 5th Floor Condo they often do the ripping in sections and disposing of the roof debris using a "trash chute system". That's the big yellow tube that attaches to a dumpster or a hauling truck.

The ripping itself might be a little distracting at times, but the placing of rubber roof systems and/or torch-down will be nearly silent. You might occasionally hear the whoosh of the torch if you kept your windows wide open.

The main thing about this install is that you may smell burning tar or glue, but this should pretty much be picked up by the wind and whisked away from your windows.
