As a student who needs to commute to school and to work, I seriously will be running in the red if I have to find a new, more expensive travel option for the amount of commuting I have to do everyday. I really hope it doesn't come to the strike. I can't afford to lose money or time.

It will be interesting to see how they resolve it since their is huge gap between what management pensions are and what the rank and file get. Something like a $5000/month difference.
I do not believe the disparity is that high, but yes that is a problem. I have a friend that recently retired from Septa. He had over 40 years in and his final years were management. Between his pension and SS he earns more now then when he was working. Of course he accepts it with open arms but also realizes they can not go on paying out like that.

The last big strike was 1998 and lasted about 6 weeks. The other one in 2005 was about a week and the 2009 strike I don't remember much about.

I wonder why Channel 6 has said nothing about this story?

Personally I think they will strike. The head of the union has said multiple times that it wasn't a question of "if" but "when".

The truth is folks should have been aware of it being " real" back on March 15th when the city division's contract expired. As I mentioned they have been working without a new contract for seven months. And, I guess, that was seven months of people getting lulled into a false sense of security that they would not strike. And, of course, there are probably thousands of people who have no idea that the contract expired months ago and what they may be facing Monday morning.

Past strikes have always caused the talk of putting transit workers in the same categories of police and firemen where they can not strike. Nothing has ever happened with that.

I have been using mass transit my whole life although I don't need it to get around. However I have family members who are dependent on it because they are elderly and no longer drive.

According to what I've read Septa wants to freeze rank and file pensions at $2500/month while many management pensions are $5000/month. My previous post was incorrect. It's still a pretty big difference.

There are still issues with raises and healthcare.

My impression is rank and files wants the exact same benefits management gets.

There were also long ones during the 70s.

The one in 2009 lasted 6 days.

But, folks, please.... Keep the possibility of strike in mind. Plan for it now. Have contingencies and try to car pool, ride bikes, etc.
