Philadelphia has the full range of safe to unsafe, expensive to less expensive, trendy to boring neighborhoods that New York does. What are you looking for?

I thank you all for responding. I was very vague so I understand some of the responses. I have lived in the state of PA before in a very small town called Lebanon. The reason for my move is to hopefully cut cost and also my husband had lived in the same apt for almost 35 years. I love the state of Pennsylvania I have friends and family there. I would like to live in a big city but I also need a change of pace I think. Everything here is so overcrowded and expensive that you barely get to enjoy the city. I did ask the question about robberies and stabbing. I have been looking through this forum for months and people seem to have terrible things to say about Philadelphia but when I visited briefly I fell in love with city

Did you read EVERY post of EVERY thread?

By human nature, people are automatically attracted to negative threads, and hang on their every words. People don't find much interest in non-negative threads. Your sentiment is something that is commonly seen on pretty much every forum throughout all of city-data. The sentiment meaning that someone seems to assume that all the threads are negative, which is more a reflection of what they are looking at, examining, and viewing, than the actual real reality itself.

I definitely agree with this, but at least OP is approaching her inquiry with an open mind, as opposed to having "confirmation bias" that many have when looking into a new place to live.

To Brooklynbetty: You've clearly picked up on the fact that negative comments about Philly are not in short supply on city-data, and while there is some truth to the grievances you'll hear, the vast majority of them are greatly exaggerated.

Like any city, Philadelphia is not without its challenges, but if you're looking for a safe and more comfortable middle-class lifestyle compared to NYC, I think you'll find plenty of options in Philadelphia and its environs.

If you provide some more specific information about your needs and budget, people would be happy to point you in a more specific direction.

Good luck!

Some of those opinions about Philadelphia are from people who haven't been here in 10,20, or more years.

Philly is great. It has it's bad sections like every other city, but certainly nothing worse than what you would find in some parts of Brooklyn.

Philly is VERY comparable to Brooklyn. There are great areas of the city. If you want a city environment, look no further than Center City or surrounding environs.

You'll be fine in the city.I don't think you're going to be robbed and stabbed

I was never robbed or stabbed in 30 years of living in Philly, and crime was worse then.

Thank you!

Same here. Never robbed. Never stabbed. Never mugged. Never burglarized.

Key words: Visited briefly...quite a difference than living the daily grind.
