Suburban Transit led performance with a 7% increase followed by Regional Rail with a 1%
increase. City Transit which represents 82% of total trips taken on the system was 1% below last
November. Monthly passenger revenue was essentially the same as last year and was less than 1%
below budget.
Plummeting gas prices and unemployment rates have an opposing influence on transit ridership. Lower
gas prices make driving more affordable. Lower unemployment means more commuters need
transportation to jobs. During November, gas prices dropped fourteen cents and fell below $3.00 for
the first time since November 2010 or four years ago. At the end of November gas was $2.95 per gallon
or fifty cents lower than last November. Unemployment rates have dipped to new lows since April
2008. The consolidated suburban rate was 4.1%, City 6.6% and State 4.5%. Last year at this time, rates
were between 1.9% and 3.3% higher.
Fiscal year-to-date total trips are down 0.94 million or 0.7% from last year. The decrease is primarily
due to one less day in the fiscal calendar period compared to last year. Regional Rail is reporting a 2.7%
and Suburban Transit a 1.4% increase in ridership. City Transit is 1.3% below the total from last year.
Total trips are 0.7% above budget. Year-to-date passenger revenue is 2% above last year and 0.7%
above budget.
