Do I really look out of place when I ask for a cheese steak with whiz? And by out of place can tell I'm from out of town.
The whiz thing is fairly new. When I was growing up there was no whiz or other processed cheese like it.
So if I get one, I want with American or provolone.

I never understood why whiz became popular at all since it's AWFUL stuff.

How old are you? Cheez Whiz has been around since 1952.

I went through a little of an anti-cheese phase for a brief period as a kid and would get cheesesteaks with no cheese.

Go figure I love all kinds of cheese as an adult and get mine with provolone (but whiz is good from time to time).

I prefer my steaks with American and sometimes provolone, but a real Kraft cheese whiz "sauce" on salty, well-done fries is awesome! I'm looking at you Steve's Prince and Ishkabibble's.

I recently shared a plain steak with a lactose intolerant friend who was visiting from out of town, and it wasn't bad.

65.

Maybe it was neighborhood specific when people started putting whiz on steaks.

I never saw it used as a kid.

I lived near 60th and Haverford Ave. as a child which is walking distance to the original Jim's Steaks at 62nd and Callowhill St( still there, btw) and never saw it used there, for instance.
