Hello Everyone,

I'm relocating to Philly in May and need help on finding the right neighborhood to live in.

29 year old single male

Looking for a place inside Philadelphia but not necessarily downtown (rather not live in a giant apartment tower).

What's the best neighborhood that is:

Historic

When are you moving? Early May
Where are you coming from? Cincinnati
Why are you moving? Work
Where will you be working? City Center
Have you been here yet? Yes

Will you buy or rent? Rent
Rent: $1800/month
Do you prefer hi-rise or walk up? Walk up

Do you have a preference of living in a NJ or PA suburb? No burbs

Are you married or single? Do you have children? No
Do you prefer public or private schools? N/A
Do you have pets? No
Do you want or need a yard? No
Are you keeping a car? Yes
Do you prefer bustling activity or calm and quiet? Calm

Thanks!

If you are working west of Broad St., I'd say look at Fairmount, Spring Garden, Fitler Square, and parts of Rittenhouse Square. You would be able to walk to work. I find the residential areas east of Broad to lean more towards bustling activity than calm, so you might live a little further away and take public transit.

I'd say Fitler Square, Rittenhouse Square or Graduate Hospital as first choices.

Washington Square West, Fairmount, Spring Garden, Old City, as your next choices.

If you are living in any of the really historic neighborhoods, you won't have much use for your car. I moved from Cincy deciding to try to not use a car the first 2 months. Within a week I realized I didn't need my car at all. Unless you plan to go to the burbs alot, mass transit and walking will get you just about everywhere you need to go for a fraction of the price.

Based on what you're looking for I'd say go for Filter Square or Washington Square West. West Philadelphia has a ton of Victorian architecture, but I'd recommend staying in the Center City though if the density doesn't bother you. As mentioned, Fairmount and Old City are very historic.

Luckily, the whole city is full of beautiful, historic houses.
