Good Afternoon Everyone

I would love to know a couple things about living in Philly. I currently live in NYC and I cant move further than 3 hours from NYC. The problem with NYC is everything is so expensive especially in areas where schools are top rated. I currently have a 10 year old who goes to a 5 star blue ribbon school and I would LOVE to keep him in a good school district. I also have a 2 year old who just attends daycare. I'm looking to move next summer when my oldest graduates 5th grade and I'm trying to narrow down some places. I see a lot of neighborhoods north of Philly that have good schools but the area seems to be mainly caucasian. That means absolutely nothing to me as my son goes to school with mainly asian and caucasian kids now, but I am African American and so are my sons and with everything going on in the news I want to know, are some of these places racist? Anywhere I should maybe stay away from?

I'm a young mother just trying to give her boys the best so if anyone can point me in the right direction I will greatly appreciate it. Also, my income for an apartment is around $1300. My goal is to buy a condo under $170,000 in the near future but I would love to rent, make sure I like the neighborhood and then buy.

Thanks Everyone

Maybe look into Cheltenham township? My impression is that the schools are good (though not astoundingly high performing like some Main Line school districts) and the area has a strong black middle class presence, so I assume it wouldn't be particularly racist.

I do not think you will have a problem with racism in the better school districts.

Why Philly? It is lower cost, but not as much as you'd think. Not if you want good schools and a good living environment. Are there other things drawing you to the area? I lived there in the past and loved (and miss) it, but I didn't have children. A condo under 170K large enough for three, and in a good neighborhood, might be challenging. Others may know better than I -- I lived in center city and not the outlying areas.

Well I know anywhere close to NYC isn't exactly dirt cheap. The reason I'm looking into Philly is because I have to stay within a 2 to 2 and a half hour radius of NYC. So if I'm in Philly I can jump in my car and come back to NY in no time. I saw a couple places around the $1000 price range for a two bedroom apartment which is a huge difference then the $1600 I'm paying now for a two bedroom, second floor apartment. Better yet in the neighborhood my son goes to school a three bedroom is $2100 and up. Anyway, that extra $600 can cover my car insurance and car payments easily. I looked into Delaware and Connecticut so PA is the next stop.

You could probably find something in that range in Neshaminy... try looking in and around Langhorne?
